I'm pretty sure even big budget Hollywood movies today still use miniatures. I know for a fact that GINO used it. Even the Star Wars Special Edition used miniatures for the Mos Esly entrance. I haven't seen many modern day scifi films (non-Japanese anyway) and the last one I saw was King Kong. I'm pretty sure it also used miniatures for some of the backgrounds.
Oh, and is Gamera 3 still the benchmark for special effects in a monster movie?

I think Gamera 3 is still the pinacle...though Gamera the Brave has some very convincing effects and they happen during the day time...this movie is typically over looked because it's not as univerally loved and I think most would agree that kaiju suits themselves are kinda fugly...but the movie itself works and so do the effects...at least in my book (the plasma fire ball that Gamera fires at the end though is a let down tho...I think it looked better in 95 actually, been a while since I've seen this film but I remember thinking it was kind of cool to see Gamera charge up and then a real let down when he shoots a small, cartoony looking orb across the screen)

"morons at Toho"... is that really necessary? I don't think so. Title edited.
