Time to get out of the legacy (aka jumping a sinking ship).

After looking at some of the recent reports on here, especially from those in Japan, well I have to ask this question?

Do you all think that it is time to jump ship and hope that the Godzilla series stays dead and the legacy never returns.

I mean well think about it, to have a successful return, it would have to scale some very high and very ugly obstacles.

1. The executive and business staff at Toho studios

2. The Japanese public.

3. Hollywood movies,

4. Differing opinions on what should be taken (either in a serious tone or a campy tone), (using mostly CGI or go for traditional methods).

I thought that GMK had restored some respect to the series but after what the people here have been saying (which may have given credence to what JD Lees of G-fan had said (if I recall correctly) about GMK).

By the way does anyone know where the first Godzilla movie stands in the opinion polls in Japan by any chance.

Okay I had just lost my train of thought but the question is still valid considering the circumstances.

The original GODZILLA is in the top of all of the serious film critics lists of Greatest Japanese Films of All Time. As for public opinion? I think the Japanese, like all people around the world, are mostly interested in new films. Only fans, and film fanatics, care about films made before they were born.

I remember at the end of Animal Planet's G-doc. Steve Ryfle's response to GFW being the final Godzilla flick was a chuckle and "There are plenty of reasons, plenty of green reasons for Toho to make many more Godzilla films."

So the last few didn't do so hot, but the Millenium series must have made some dough for Toho if they decided to double the number of films they were gonna make in the series from 3 to 6. Godzilla films don't cost as much to make as your American blockbuster. His films don't have to be number one for several weeks to be a "success." Godzilla is like Bugs Bunny, Doctor Who and Star Trek; there is no way for us to be rid of him.

... but what I would really like is a new Rodan movie!

The whole "jumping ship" thing is silly. I've been a Godzilla fan all my life and a decade or so of no new movies isn't going to do anything to me.

Nothing Toho can do is going to bring Godzilla back. It will happen when the Japanese movie-going public decides that they want Godzilla back.

But with the way the sentiment towards Godzilla is over there I say prepare for a long wait.
