Did G'85 get it's world premiere in Hollywood? It may have gotten a theatrical release here, but that wasn't TOO unusual for the time. I don't think anyone expected it not to. I've been a Godzilla fan since 1986. I don't remember any film in the past 25 years being a well-hyped and anticipated as GFW.

Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

Just because Godzilla never had traditional anniversary film, doesn't mean Final Wars wasn't marketed as one. It was in US Media as much as GFW was. Every piece of marketing material had the nice "50th" logo plastered everywhere. The opening montage was a through back to how far Godzilla had come over the years. It was supposed to be a celebration of the franchise. It was marketed as that. Godzilla got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. There was an American Premire. There was a hot new director who might turn the Millennium series around.

...and we got Final Wars.

Instead of showing off what I've always liked about Godzilla, I felt Kitamura handled it in a "LOOK HOW CRAZY THIS STUFF IS GUYS!   HAHAHAA, HIS HAT FELL OFF AND IT MADE A COMICAL WHISTLE SOUND. GODZILLA IS SERIOUS FILM MAKING!!!! LOLOLOLOL   " manner.

Yes, it was marketed as an anniversary film, nearly a decade ago. I just see no reason why that should play a major part in informing current opinions of the filmmaking on display.

I will also say this:

I felt that Final Wars glorified what the general public felt about Godzilla as a story telling device.

Just observe the following. Final Wars on IMDB is rated a 6.4 out of 10.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0399102/?ref_=sr_1

These are all of the Godzilla Films which are rated less by the general American public.

Mothra vs. Godzilla
Godzilla vs. Gigan
Godzilla 1985
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
Godzilla vs. Biollante
Godzilla Raids Again
Godzilla 2000
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II
Son of Godzilla
Godzilla Versus the Sea Monster
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
Godzilla vs. Megalon
Godzilla's Revenge
Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster
Godzilla vs. Megaguirus
Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla
Terror of Mechagodzilla
Invasion of Astro-Monster
Destroy All Monsters

I read it as the follows:

[Scene]
Kitamura is siting in the office of Shogo Tomiyama and they are trying to brain storm how to send Godzilla off for awhile, or turn the series around.

Tomiyama: What do you think international audiences like about Godzilla?
Kitamura: Probably the cheesy SPFX, bad lip reading, bad plots and comical actions.
Tomiyama: Genius! Make that film a reality!

[End]

It effects my current opinion because my current opinion is based largely on my initial opinion of the movie... which was honestly much better back then than it is now. Now it has had 10 years to soak in and make me that much more bitter.
