Had to happen, didn't it?

It's tough to pick a favourite here. Both are intelligent and well crafted. Outside of a few blunders, their visuals hold up well. But Gojira is heavier and more urgent; Mothra vs. Godzilla is easier to watch. I imagine most of the votes will be founded on personal taste, rather than any particular measure of quality. (You could say that about other voting periods, but I expect it to be more pronounced here.)

Gojira appeals more to my tastes. It gets my vote.

I'm on team Mothra vs Godzilla, G 54 is the better crafted film but its just so dour and depressing that it tends to not get as much playtime in my blu ray player. Mothra vs Godzilla on the other hand is always in rotation and it is also a top quality film. So again, I am picking Mothra vs Godzilla for its digestibility.

Given the choice between two superior films I'll take the one I had the most fun with. Mothra gets my vote.

Ooh tough choice. I was actually just watching my bluray of Mothra vs Godzilla the other day. It really is a magnificent film. But so is Godzilla 54. And they are so drastically different in tone and style. I could almost do a coin toss for this one. But when I first saw the new round I had a VERY fleeting initial gut reaction in favor of G'54 so I guess I'll vote that way.

Why couldn't this have been the final?

Really, really close. G '54 was the pioneer, absolutely terrifying, and has the greatest character in the genre's history. MvG has Tsuburaya's techniques perfected a decade later, the best Goji suit, and a couple great villains. "Mothra" by a hair.

Godzilla 54 is better film, but of the two I am more likely to watch Mothra. The original movie can be difficult to watch, as it should be, because it's message is heavy. I kind of place the original in a different class the the rest of the films because it's not really the same as the rest of the series despite many of the sequels having anti-nuclear undertones. No Godzilla movie since has come close to being as powerful a anti-nuclear story and frankly, that makes the original unique. I typically don't even rank it in my "top" lists because of this reason alone (despite the fact that it's probably the best film overall).

On the other hand, Mothra vs. G does has some of my favorite sequences. The military's battle with Godzilla is one of the best in the series, and I absolutely love the idea of using metal nets to help electrocute Godzilla. Also, this version Mothra is so well done - the quick shots of her fighting Godzilla are excellent and the dub is great.

Mothra vs. Godzilla gets my vote.

Godzilla 1954 is a masterpiece but I prefer Mothra vs Godzilla by a freakin' longshot. One of my all-time favorites.

Mothra vs Godzilla for me.(This should have been the finals but there is a worthy competitor on the other side). Gojira is a better made film and I will always respect what it did and still does for the franchise today but it's not even in my fav five where Mothra vs Godzilla is.

Going Mothra vs Godzilla here.

Mothra vs Godzilla.

ALSO YES! TOMG won :D!

But seriously, Mothra vs Godzilla.

It is THE quintessential Godzilla film for many decades. I pair this movie and vs Biollante together, as films to introduce genre critics to the Godzilla series. Well crafted stories, sfx, and characters with well done monster action of their time.

You get extensive continuous military operations against Godzilla and treated like a walking disaster. He drives the events of the story. It's solid.

Godzilla 54 has the stronger symbolic value. But as a MOVIE? Mothra vs Godzilla for sure.

Also, I think Mothra 61 is a better crafted movie than Godzilla 54 too.
