As much as I enjoy MG '74, I'm voting for Mothra vs. Godzilla. MvG has a stronger plot, somewhat more interesting characters, and at least a slight edge in visual effects. Its portrayal of Godzilla can't pass without mention, either: he's a force of nature, albeit an angry one with Mothra's egg as his target. When he takes out buildings by accident, it's funny, but he doesn't become a clown, and he doesn't lose his credibility as a threat. That's hard to pull off, but the movie does it anyway. There's still a lot to like about MG74 - Mechagodzilla, King Seesar, the colorful visual effects - but I've come to think more highly of MvG over time.

As much as I love Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, I super love MOthra vs. Godzilla.

Mothra vs. Godzilla all the way. All the way and back. To the bank.

Had to soul-search for this one. Two of my favorites in every sense. With a heavy heart I have to cast my vote for Mothra. It's the cleanest example you can give for a stellar Godzilla film. Can we get a loser's bracket for 3rd place?

Flipped a coin because it's too damn close to call for me. MechaGodzilla take my vote. Sorry Mothra.

The '70s MG duology is tops for me. Mechagodzilla gets my vote, but I do love Mothra vs. Godzilla. I like to view it and the original Mothra as a duology.

Another difficult choice! Mothra vs Godzilla is, without a doubt, one of the best films in the entire series. And Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla is, imo, probably the defining entry of the seventies films and an absolute blast of a movie. I really don't know if I can vote this time. Mothra is definitely the better film, from a technical or critical point of view. But I've always voted based on my personal enjoyment of each entry so far. And I'm really just not sure which one I like more. I love them both.

I'll go with vs Mothra, but once again it's a very narrow margin.

"Mothra vs. Godzilla" is maybe the pinnacle of kaiju eiga perfection. Honda and Tsuburaya at their best.

Exactly. If the opposing movie were almost anything but MvG, it very easily could be going the other way.

I find GvsMG'74 to be a positively delightful film - but Mothra vs. Godzilla is my number one favorite movie of all time.

Mothra not only features one of the best Godzilla entrances in the entire series, but also has one of the best military engagements of any kaiju movie - using electric netting to attack Godzilla is brilliant.

I think MechaGodzilla is a lot of fun, but it's not as good as Mothra is (and I actually like ToMG better if I'm picking between the two Showa doppelganger movies).
