I can't believe we all forgot Redd Foxx. He was always making references to Godzilla and giant monsters on Sanford and Son. I remember one time he even mentioned Dogora and it was something like this:
Fred: They play good movies on Sunday afternoon. Look see, Dogora the Space Monster, starring Yosuke Natsuki and Yôko Fujiyama.
Lamont: Now who are they?
Fred: Actors. What'd you think they were, motorcycles?

I think any time a movie has a giant monster or enemy(like War of the Worlds) theres an inevitable similarity to Goji. But I think many of us here project our own love for Goji into situations where it was never intended. Yeah Spielberg liked Godzilla as a child. Yeah the Japanese tourists were a pure Goji nod. But I think War of the Worlds or King Kong is taking it a little far. I think movies like Pee Wees big adventure or Sky Captain are more clear cut fan nods. There's an equal disdain for Godzilla as being cheesy. Keep in mind Spielberg said in a book about Lost World I believe he didn't want the dinos looking bad like the "cheesy Japanese films." And while Peter Jackson doesn't hate them he also somewhat looks down his nose at them.
