Yeah, I guess we all know what movie everyone is watching THIS week! Yeah, me too. I haven't watched the Japanese version in a long time, so I guess this is a perfect time for a re-evaluation. To be as brief as possible, still a great film, but not one that I watch repeatedly. Gojira is really stark, and sad and realistic (credit that more to Honda than Tsuburaya), and the story is told with great believability and conviction. However, it's not the most exciting film ever made. It is certainly the best film of the entire Godzilla series (though Godzilla vs. The Thing is a strong challenger of that), and arguably Ishiro Honda's best film. I guess, the best way to look at it is that Gojira is more "art-of-filmmaking" than escapist fare. More than one might think. The thing I enjoyed the most about the film, is wondering how certain effects scenes were done, what miniatures were constructed with what, etc.
I watched Godzilla King of the Monsters! too, but that version is so dear to heart, I can't really knock it any of its shortcomings (which aren't that bad at all).
Anyway, the original Japanese version of Godzilla gets four and a half stars, out of five from me.
