I would have to say that the most awesome new to me thing that I learned about kaiju stuff in 2009 was that the Bireley's signs seen so prominently in classics like Mothra and King Kong vs Godzilla are advertisements for an actual product. While I was listening to the audio commentary on Mothra vs Godzilla my ears perked up when Ed Godziszewski and Steve Ryfle mention that the Bireley's sign seen in the back of the little lean-to hut is for a real product and that this product is an orange flavored soft drink, which can actually be briefly seen on the shelves in the little lean-to hut and that it is still available in Japan despite it having been an import and that the soft drink is no longer being manufactured in the States. Whoa, that is some cool product placement and some cool new to me information. It's the type of information that I like to learn about something I've seen dozens of time before and never really thought about, it's similar to learning your local history and being able to recognize places where things happened.
So what was the one coolest or interesting to you bit of information that you learned last year in regards to Japanese sci-fi or fantasy in 2009?
