So, I'm compiling a list of monster crossover movies, ranging from the Universal monster classics to direct-to-DVD junk like Boa vs. Python, and I thought I'd ask your guys' help/opinion on this. Specifically, which Godzilla movies should be listed on it.
Obviously, King Kong vs. Godzilla is on the list. As is Godzilla vs. the Thing (if Universal monsters meeting each other counts, then it should with Toho monsters). However, after this, I start getting stuck.
I'm considering including Ghidrah the Three-Headed Monster, mainly because it throws Rodan into the mix (similar to House of Frankenstein after Frankenstein meets the Wolfman). But then, does this also mean that Monster Zero is a crossover movie? And what about Godzilla versus the Sea Monster, due to Mothra,?
And what about Destroy All Monsters, when Toho decided to crossover most of their monsters? And then what about Godzilla vs. Mothra and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II? And Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Tokyo SOS and Final Wars?
Currently, my line of thought is the only Godzilla movies that should be considered crossovers (even in the loosest of senses) are the following:
- King Kong vs. Godzilla
- Godzilla vs. the Thing
- Ghidrah the Three-Headed Monster
- Destroy All Monsters
These are the only movies where it feels like the monsters meeting each other is a big deal, the only movies that say "crossover" to me. The others are just sort of "Yeah, the monsters are fighting. Must be Tuesday."
Yeah, I'm probably putting in way too much thought over this, but I just thought I'd ask, plus it might spark some interesting discussion.
Your thoughts?
