Megalo makes an excellent point.
You don't have to agree with him, Legion, but I think you're being very unfair to Banjax. Hell, the other day, Sparkie and I were talking about what Angilas was doing in Siberia in MG'74's opening. We decided he returned to his homeland in order to find a female Angilas, or another of his kind. It seems that he's howling as if calling out for a reply. There's nothing in the film or anywhere else to support this, but it's what we decided on. Banjax has done a similar thing, but apparently, he sees something in the film or the dialogue that you're not.
Anyway, for what it's worth, he's the dialogue in the Japanese version:
<Karen> Barugon has a single weakness.
<Old Guy> Would you tell us?
<Karen> Barugon is a typical animal. It cannot live beneath the water. Because of it's unique cell structure, the color of its blood is purple. He is attracted to sparkling light and it can lure Barugon over a long distance. It is a useful weapon. He'll follow such a ray to anywhere it leads.
<Kojiro Hongo> As a method to kill Barugon, we could lead him into a water trap that he couldn't escape.
<General> And this way to lead him... ?
<Karen> I have it.
Karen breaks out a diamond
<Karen> This is a sacred diamond of the Black Tribe which has been passed on since our ancestors.
<Old Guy> And Barugon will follow this diamond?
<Karen> Barugon is attracted to light. This diamond's light will make it very attractive. This light will lure him right into the water.
<Woman Officer> Are those things natural on the Black Tribe's land?
<General> Hey!
<Karen> This is the only one. The Black Tribe used it 1000 years ago to stop Barugon's destruction. So this diamond will certainly lure Barugon to any body of water we choose.
<Old Guy> I'll be surprised if he notices the diamond. Have your people witness Barugon's attraction to light?
<Karen> It is the right way. It is God's way.
Now what I take away from this is that Barugon can be in the water, but he needs to be submerged in some way that he cannot get out. In the film's opening, Barugon wasn't staying in the water-- he was exiting it. However, Gamera somehow knew that he needed to drag Barugon into the water to kill him.
Take it as you will.
<Vicious> "YOU ARE SAYING IMPUDENCE TO ME! THAT IS IMPUDENCE!" <Spike> OMGWTF!!!1-- The Worst Cowboy Bebop Fanfic Ever.
