It's that time of the year again, and James Rolfe is tackling sequels as this year's theme, and he reviews a series of sequels every week. This week is Gamera!

I wish he were going over the entire series, but this is cool I suppose.

Cool, I guess. I'm not a fan of his "reviews", to be honest though.

This Gamera one seems kind of low energy compared to the ones he did for Godzilla, but that may just be my misremembering.

Have yet to watch one, but I like his reviews in general when looking for something succinct and to the point

James is done with Gamera this year. He finished with the Hesei Series, and Gamera The Brave. I find it odd he skipped over Gamera: Super Monster. It's funny how Gamera The Brave got a longer review than any of the Hesei films.

He actually did talk about Super Monster, at the end of the Zigra video. Overall, I'd say he did a really good job of discussing the series. Now I need to go out and actually get some of these movies Aside from the MST3K set, I only have the Heisei movies and the Guiron/Jiger double feature on DVD. I could stand to fill in the gaps.

Well, I guess I also have Barugon on a less-than-legit DVD, but I'm otherwise a bit behind the times in regards to non-Godzilla releases. On the other hand, we're only a couple months away from Christmas, so...

Overall, I think he did a good job of covering it. It shows he has a certain affinity for Gamera, but that he's just not quite in love with it the way he is with other stuff, or Godzilla.

I'm fine with that. Gamera's pretty well second-fiddle for me too...I haven't even bothered to get the Zigar/Super Monster DVD.

I guess if I had a complaint, it'd be that I'd have liked him to just touch on GOTU and G2 a little bit more...I mean, I feel like he does a DECENT job on GOTU...touches on it reviving the series, the effects are kinda hit-and-miss, but emphasizes that it shows Gamera's efficacy as a serious monster movie...but he does not do a very good job on G2 at all. He basically just says it's ambitious and highlights the craziness of Legion's design. Doesn't really touch on ANYTHING about the story even slightly.

I did appreciate that he doesn't seem as taken with G3 as many are. Kinda echoes my own feelings.

Gamera the Brave deserves to be covered a lot. It's a good movie that people just hate on because it's not Heisei Gamera.

I enjoy Viras and Guiron, but by Jiger, the series begins to feel a little lifeless and stale and I've never heard anything good about Zigra and/or Super Monster.

If you watch them back to back and in release order, then yes, the last few Showa films feel very repetitive. But on its own, I think JIGER is a better movie (if not more entertaining) than all the post-GYAOS films.

I would never, under any circumstances, call GAMERA VS. JIGER a "great" movie.
