I liked this movie because they went back to the showa roots but wasn't corny at all with the kid. They did everything right in this film except for his roar. I give this film two thumbs up and a beer. Way better than any Disney film. Also, gotta love the attention to detail in this movie like the '70s period its based on.

I'd put off watching Gamera the Brave for most of a decade, partly because I was hesitant about the more Showa Gamera-esque tone I heard this one took. When my sister found out I'd owned the Blu-Ray since it's US release and hadn't even opened it yet, she peer pressured me into finally opening it up and giving it a try. ^_^()

Overall impression? Meh.

Don't get me wrong, this is a decent and well-made movie. They do a fantastic job taking a Showa Gamera premise and crafting it into a contemporary Family film. The actors put in good performances (I was impressed by the kids), the cinematography was quite good, the music, direction, etc. And the story was a decent one. But nearly the whole frickin' time I was just BORED! ^_^()

I have heard a lot of people compare this film to the Showa series, but i think it has more in common with the Heisei. Really the only thing that is "Showa" to me is that Gamera is a friend to children (but he is also a child himself). The violence to me is more akin to the Heisei series as is the mystical elements (which were not present in the Showa series at all). It does try to bring the genre back to kids (which is where a little more than half the Showa series focused) so maybe thats were the comparison comes from.

Watched this film again after a long period of time. I had forgotten how cute it was. I real enjoy it. Sure a lot of it is from a child standpoint but didn't a lot of us become Godzilla/Gamera films when we were kids. I like the heart it has. And you can see in Gamera's eyes in this film the never quit attitude. I thought the effects were solid. Zedus is an amazing kaiju. And the scenes of the little turn flying around were adorable. Makes me miss my own pet turtle. Seriously after Kaneko's trilogy thi s is one of my favorite Gamera films.

Question. Did anyone release a decent sized vinyl of Zedus? I'd sure love to own one.

Bandai did a decent one that has gotten hard to find. Konami did a beautiful smaller one as well as part of its SF series.

I've seen the direction of this film compared to works of Hayao Miyazaki and Steven Spielberg, and I totally agree with those analyses. Gamera the Brave is a much more grounded film than the overly fanciful Showa movies. It might look like a mere "kiddie flick" at a first glance, but on closer inspection there are strong mature undertones and a surprisingly melancholy mood overall. I'm quite fond of melancholy, so that's probably why I like it so much.

Did a partial re-watch earlier today and liked the movie even more. It pains me to say it (pains I tell you), but the post-Showa Gamera series just beats the pants off the post-Showa Godzilla series.

I find myself becoming more and more of a Gamera fan. I've even come around to the original series of films... I don't love 'em or anything, but I have come around to them.

I mostly enjoy the Showa Gamera series from an ironic level...I know that's not always a popular take around here (enjoying any movie ironically), but I wildly enjoy something like Gamera vs. Guiron as a wild movie that makes no sense and is fun to poke fun at...while I don't actually think it's a GOOD movie.

It's always amazing to me how something as frankly mediocre and cheesy as the Gamera series morphed into something so good after its initial run.

As a Power Rangers fan, I did a double-take when I saw Ryuta Tasaki's name on this as director!

I just rewatched this last night using my PS3 and a larger TV than I used to have the last time I watched it.
This is the DVD version (hard to find the Blu-Ray cheap).
It looked great, sounded good, and of course the story was fun & a bit sad near the end.
The scenes of the kids running their little legs off to get the stone to Toto (Gamera) were very moving.

The tiny and somewhat larger versions of Toto were cute as heck.
Loved the little "nod" to Guiron in there with the knife.

The roar was OK at best...

I need to rewatch this. I own it on blu ray and have only watched it once. I remember it being a fun film and Jidas is a particularly sinister villain. If only Toto had Gamera's roar...

Apparently, the new Gamera 1995-2006 Blu-Ray set in Japan will be the first time Gamera The Brave is available on Blu in Japan.

Interesting. I wonder (HOPE!) if this will help at all in paving the way to another US bluray release? I still regret not nabbing the first release and now it goes for crazy prices. I made the typical error... "Oh I've got the DVD, no rush to upgrade..." WRONG.

I'd love for Mill Creek to rerelease the films with the new masters and special features as special edition versions.

... but at the same time: looking at that price makes me feel fortunate I live in a country where there's a Blu-Ray box with all the films save The Brave for about $20.

Man, I love the costume for the old Gamera from the prologue. Its brief appearance just adds to the specialness. I'd say it's tied with the G2 suit as my favorite Gamera design.

(and that Sunguts figure for it looks so cool!)

It's funny to think that a few years earlier this film did the whole 'monsters as a metaphor for a kid getting over the death of his mom' thing before J.J. Abrams did it with Super 8, and not only that; but did it so much better. It makes so much more sense in the context of this film.
