Godzilla and Gamera did "fight" in the middle of a huge stage at Expo 70 with Haruo Nakajima acting in the Godzilla suit. You can read about the account in Guy Tucker's book Age of the Gods.

Daiei had alot of respect for Godzilla, which is why they tried to keep their Gamera movies as different from the Godzilla series as possible. So it would have been a bit wierd to see them share the screen together. There were even different suit making methods so it would have looked like a Bandai toy standing next to a Marusan (like the reference?).

In the showa days, I would have wanted a Godzilla vs. Gamera fight in which Godzilla would kick his ass. I enjoyed the old Gamera films, but to me they just couldn't compare to Godzilla.

Now if you want to talk Heisei era, thats a totally different ball game as a Heisei Godzilla vs. Heisei Gamera would have been pretty damn sweet!

I have to agree...I didn't even hear about it till recently but I guess it's the holy grail of G-Fandom...just stick it right next to a Bronze Godzilla 64 on your shelf and your golden....actually I think I now have a future goal for someday, just have to win the lottery first.
