Gamera vs Barugun

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

Gamera vs Barugon was the best of the showa series IMO. Gamera was still kinda a (not a friend to children) type of monster yet. The first two Gamera films are the best of the showa series.

I'm resurrecting this because I finally saw the movie.

I was pretty surprised I enjoyed it. I didn't like the first Gamera movie too much (but found it to be utterly hilarious), and I know starting after this one it's all about Gamera and the kids. It's just kinda funny that Gamera is maybe in only 12 minutes of the whole movie, and the jewel thief is pretty humorous with his boat.

I'm not one to mock Showa Gamera films needlessly, but by God, I couldn't stand this film. I had one of those cheap DVD sets you see at Suncoast and everywhere else, with four of the Gamera films in it. Popped that sucker in and watched the original Gamera film (US version of course). That wasn't a great movie, but at least it was entertaining.

Went right into this one and fell asleep. Twice. So I'm totally with Ben on this one. There are also the aforementioned issues with Barugon and the bizarre weakness to water.

In fact, this movie in a way ruined the old Gamera films for me. That happened three years ago and I've never touched my Showa DVDs since! Sad, now that I think about it.

For those interested, I've uploaded a few tracks from Chuji Kinoshita's excellent score for this film, which I think is one of the movie's best attributes:
