It was a kids movie that didn't make the adult feel like a moron. I thought it was wonderful and had great cinematography and SPFX.

Oh well, to each their own.

Shoulda' called it "Squirtle the Brave..."

The Kaneko Gamera films were some of the best kaiju movies ever. The kiddie turn in the latest film was a big disappointment as far as I'm concerned.

Chalk me up as another who thought GtB was good (though not great). They should've brought back Guiron, but other than that I thought it was a nice updating of "the friend of all children" theme. I thought the acting (esp. of the boy-lead) and direction were commendable (and the FX were good, too).

And you may say Gamera looked like a plush toy, but he actually looked more like a real animal (though a tortoise, not a turtle) than any of the Kaneko versions (and yes, I love the Kaneko trilogy).

Hey, any kaiju flicks are better than no kaiju flicks. Alas, with Godzilla in stasis and GtB not doing any biz, I'm afraid the latter may be what we'll get for the foreseeable future... :(

Its too bad Noriaki Yuasa (Gamera's creator) wasn't around to see this one. It brings Gamera back to his roots and what the character is all about. Yuasa disliked Kaneko's films because he didn't think they captured Gamera right (although I love Kaneko's trilogy as much as anybody, Kaneko, Higuchi and crew had said they never liked Gamera before they started the trilogy. Yuasa was a consultant for G:GOTU but apparently he wasn't treated all that well and he didn't return for G2 and G3). Yuasa loved children and Gamera was always meant for little kids, so its understandable from his perspective. It is his character after all. If Barney was all of a sudden a serious, mature character, I'm sure his creator would be pissed too.

Its too bad because Gamera the Brave pays tons of homage to both the 60s films AND the Kaneko trilogy. It was a great 40th anniversary film in that sense. I think Yuasa-san would have loved it.
