I've gotta' throw in my two cents . . .
Back when this new film was announced, I was originally going to tease everyone, saying that they're just going to ignore Kaneko and go back to making kiddie films!
But now, this film harkens back to a semi-kiddie feel! And as a big fan of the Showa Gamera series, I was really delighted to read this! I hope it will be a fun movie.
The whole reaction to this film reminds me of that to Godzilla 2000: Millennium, back when it was announced/produced.
Yes, the Heisei Gamera films were great (and I agree with some here that it should be left alone), but you can't deny the history and popularity Gamera has had before then. This is different from Godzilla, who started out as a monster for all audiences (both kids and adults). Gamera started as a kids' monster, and is best recognized by Japanese Joe Public as such (Ask Modstoon/Hikari and Naoko Takeuchi!). Anyone who thinks Gamera should never be for kids, or should be strictly dark and "mature", IS KIDDING THEMSELVES!!! This is the kind of attitude that even shoos people (even kids) away from superhero comic-books (and all related phenomena; Movies, etc.) except for just the fans. We lose out on a new generation.
I'm sure Kadokawa Films will make an entertaining family film. I don't know if they'll be making something so silly or "patronizing" that they hated about the Showa Gamera films, but it should be good enough to stand up to an Ultraman movie. Kids do not equal a bad movie.
All in all, I'm quite content with this news.
