Gamera Questions and Observations

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

I really wanted to see a bloody, tense, explosive battle with the monsters literally tearing each other apart and the hukans trying desperately to escape before Ayana kills them all- says cyhunter

Er... that is pretty much what I saw in the movie.

Cy, two things:

1. Gamera didn't look at his pinned hand and simply stare blankly at the impaled apendage -- Gamera was watching Irys ABSORB his lifeforce through its tentacles (and building up his plasma energy in the spears of those tentacles), and realized he must do something -- quick. Ka-BLOOEY!

2. I can't think of a recent Godzilla film where the humans do nothing more than just "stare at the monster action from a distance" -- or on a television monitor -- save for Akane Yashiro's battlefield dash to access Kiryu's Maintenence Bay.

Yeah, see, that joke pretty much sums it up for me. I personally would've gotten more emotion if the fight had been like the one in GvsBio--by that I mean the monsters really tear into each other, with skin and blood flying as they shreik and kill each other. Instead, it felt like they were tired and worn out and just wanted to get it over so they could have a cheese sandwitch and a nap. Without dialogue, expression and action must carry the weight of a scene, and in my eyes, neither the monsters nor the humans were quite enough considering the supposed magnitude of the scene. This is why I think it could've benefited from a wider arena (so the fight could be more furious and painful) and something for the humans to do (to add some immediate urgency to the situation which it otherwise lacked on a viceral level).

On a personal note, I also would've liked if they had had some really, really, REALLY over-the-top music, like John Williams' score for the opening of the ark in Raiders of the Lost Ark--complete and utter chaos as the Nazis explode, melt, and dissolve and the furious spirits tear into anything that gazes upon them...

^ I thought the score was fine. It built tension, then EXPLODED...just like Iris. :D

Whatever floats your boat.

*BRAG MODE RE-INITIATED*

Also, I'm not sure if I've told you this before, but one of the girls in my acting class is Will Ferell's sister. It kinda sucks to be her, because when he comes to watch our performances he come incognito but always ends up unintentionally stealing the limelight.

Such are the odditities of living in Orange County.

...wow, now I feel more important than you. :P

Anyway, back on topic...
