While Godzilla vs. Gamera is, indeed, a dream match up, there's some reasons why, personally, I doubt it will ever happen. Besides the fact that these are owned by two different companies.
1. Gamera isn't an A-List kaiju. Oh yeah, he's big within the fandom, but that's it. He isn't some King Kong-level kaiju. It'd be like Marvel announcing a crossover movie between Iron Man and... . Sure, comic fans would go nuts, but the general public is just going to go... "Who...?" There's only a handful of giant monsters that can match Godzilla's stardom, and most of them are already owned by Toho. So why would Toho risk a failure when they can just get money by doing Godzilla vs. Mothra: Fate of Japan or Godzilla vs. Ghidorah: Destruction of Japan, or something like that?
I'm not saying I don't want to see Godzilla vs. Gamera, but for Toho to just go for the idea because the fans want it doesn't seem like grounded logic. There isn't guaranteed money there. And the fact that Gamera: The Brave was a disappointment supports this even further.
And also the fact that, even if they would make Godzilla vs. Gamera and it would be a moderate success, they'd have to split the profits with Kadokawa.
Honestly, as much as I hate to say it, the only way I can see Godzilla vs. Gamera become a thing is in two ways.
- Toho outright buys the Gamera rights or Kadokawa entirely. I don't see this happening unless Kadokawa goes belly up and the rights for Gamera come up for public sale.
- IDW buys Gamera comic rights and Toho loosens up about crossovers within the comics.
2. The story line. Gamera is a good kaiju. He may not be a goodie goodie as Mothra at times (at least the most famous, Heisei era incarnation), he will be seen as the good guy. This means Godzilla will have to be the bad guy. And the only way I can see these two characters balance out their personalities for this type of match up is if Godzilla enters something along the lines of his GMK persona. This means there's only two ways this movie can possibly end.
- Godzilla is defeated by some sort of almighty attack (mana beam) from Gamera which MAYBE kills Gamera too.
- Godzilla beats Gamera and is then killed/defeated by the military, GMK style.
There is no way Toho would let Gamera walk away with a clean win.
"But MM, maybe they would team up to fight a bigger threat!!!!"
Yeah, maybe they would. Maybe, after a brief skirmish, King Ghidorah would arrive with a flock of Gyaos. Yeah, one problem there. Then it isn't Godzilla vs. Gamera. It's Godzilla & Gamera versus their most overused opponents ever. In a story line that would probably make more sense to be Mothra & Gamera rather than Godzilla & Gamera. Personally, I'd rather see them fight than team up against some bad kaiju that appear halfway through the movie. And this would then beg the question: why is Gamera targeting Godzilla, because obviously he wouldn't be a huge threat to the planet if Gamera's willing to partner with him.
When it comes to kaiju crossovers, I believe we are much more likely to see a crossover between Gamera and Ultraman. Similar characters with similar star power. And these are two characters that wouldn't have to actually engage one another like Godzilla and Gamera would.
