Official Gamera 2006 Thread (may contain spoilers)

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

I love Jack B's avatar!

One thing I saw on the site now and over the past few weeks: they're actually doing a "roadshow" with that injured Toto Gamera on a truck, and carting him all over Japan!

I'd say that I haven't been this excited for a kaiju film since Final Wars...but there hasn't really been any kaiju films since Final Wars...
But I'm excited nonetheless!

Who sings the theme? It sounds very Do As Infinity-ish, but I'm sure it's not them, since they broke up last year...

EDIT: Though, Tomiko Van *is* said to be going solo...

I thought it was only mediocre. The only interesting part was Gamera's flying scene and the fire ball. I don't think it really had a cool factor going for it. Don't asume I'm biased because it's not Godzilla, becaue I've loved tailers for other Japanese movies. To quote my friend, "[It] looks like a real life cartoon, [about a] magic turtle that changes a kid's life."

Ya I see your point Jorzilla. Unfortunately the direction of this movie is the only way the genre may stay alive. Family movies dominate the Japanese box office, and if families realize this movie is coming out, maybe this will too.

Watched the trailer, and my opinion is still as it's been since I first read the Sci-Fi Japan article. It looks like it'll be a fun family movie and enjoyable to watch, but nothing great by any means.

The special effects certainly look fantastic, minus the CGI Zedus tongue attack. But hopefully that will get touched-up and polished in the final cut of the movie. I remember many SFX shots from early Godzilla: Final Wars promotional videos, trailers, and TV spots that looked less-than-impressive but which ended up being fine-tuned and looking quite good indeed in the finished film (Zilla, anyone?).

Seeing Zedus in motion, he looks even more badass than in still shots. The special effects used to bring him to life are incredible, and his fighting style is very impressive. He's looking to turn out as one very memorable kaiju.

I'm not exactly surprised that Toto doesn't make the classic Gamera cries in that trailer, seeing as he is only a juvenile after all. It'd be like hearing Minilla emit Godzilla's roar regularly. But hopefully, if this movie gets a sequel and/or launches a new series of Gamera movies in which Toto eventually grows to an adult Gamera, the classic roar will return.

And Toto's spinning jet flames are indeed classic blue.
