Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

I'm really surprised at the apparent unanimity regarding the American version's superiority to the original. The couple of times I've watched Gammera the Invincible, it's really made me want to see the Japanese version because I've always found the new scenes to be downright obnoxious. I have the Alpha DVD of Invincible as well as the Celebrity VHS, and I find the version on the Celebrity release highly preferable. But in any event, I'm certainly looking forward to this new disc.

Tyler, let's just say that I love both versions the same. That's how I honestly feel (but the less "Calling all Fighter Planes", the better). I've loved these movies since I was a kid, even though other kids thought Godzilla was better, I still loved them all. So, call me crazy!

King_Ghidorah, I don't think that the Japanese version of GAMERA is "batcrap insane" at all. It's a pretty straight-forward Japanese monster flick of the period, but with a character (Toshio Sakurai) who's a bit... off. :)

I'm glad to know GAMERA SUPER MONSTER is among the films Shout got and will be releasing. I hope they manage to find a much higher quality copy of the dub to include though, because the one on their previous Elvira release was pretty poor. I know the video also had a lot to be desired, but at least it was consistent all the way through, whereas the sound kept alternating between being half-decent and downright muffled.

Also August, any chance we could get Shout/Kadokawa to work with G-FEST in possibly getting a showing of GAMERA (or any of the other films that may be available at that time) on the big screen?

I like the spine of the DVD, the fact it contains not only the film title and a pic of Gamera, but the Japanese title text.

I didn't see the Showa Gamera films until I was about 14 or 15, via some unauthorized releases that I got for dirt cheap at FYE. The image quality was terrible, cropped to fullscreen and desecrated to no end, and they were the edited, dub-only US versions. All in all, I liked the monster battles, but aside from Gamera vs. Gyaos (which I loved), I really didn't like the movies, especially Barugon and Zigra. I'm looking forward to rediscovering them in proper quality this year.

The cover art of the Gamera DVD looks excellent.
