Favorite Showa Gamera Movie?

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

My favorite is a tie between Gamera Vs. Gyaos and Gamera Vs. Viras. Gyaos, like the first two films, is still pretty dark, vengeful and brooding for a kids' film, and the little boy Eiichi is actually likable and empathetic. I also like Viras, and not only because I had a great pleasure of meeting Carl Craig (who played boy scout Jim Morgan) at AFFE 2002 (I was also delighted to know that he's a fellow Virginian!), but also because the film is the first one with a more lighthearted feel (the climactic fight was really wacky and twisted!), and Viras and his creepy minions (who sort of remind me of the Shocker surgeons from Masked Rider) are probably the best and most sinister alien villains of the series!

I went with War of the Monsters (Gamera vs. Barugon). That one kinda got me going when I first saw it because, in addition to not even being aware that there were any Gamera movies after the first one, I remember being really pissed off after Gamera got his butt kicked by Barugon in the first fight. I thought the rest of the movie was going to be about how the military was gonna kill the "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!"! Then, when Gamera came back (and hardly a word was said about him for about a half hour) and won, I was happy. So that one's my favorite, followed by Gyaos, Guiron and Jiger.

Gamera vs Barugon. It's a fun movie with a good villain.

You know, my favorite is Gamera vs Zigra. Someone might get angry at me for saying this, but that movie is just so bad that it's good. I love the part where Zigra falls down and you can see a portion of the suits head crack right open! I also love the theory that you can break a space alien's hold on a person's mind by yelling "AHHHHH!!!! AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!"

Second on my list is SuperMonster Gamera. But I can't figure out if the main spacewoman is cute or not, and that bothers me. :o

A week ago I received a wide-screen, subtitled version of Gamera vs. Jiger and it is glorious!

Up until now I had HATED the Jiger character having only seen representations of him in poster art and in the Gamera HG set of small figures. But once I saw him on film, though I still do not care for the looks of the monster suit design, I have a higher opinion of the character and this movie is my new favorite Showa Gamera film.

Mind you, my opinion may be affected greatly by the fact that as of now this is the only Showa Gamera film I've viewed in totality in pristine quality. I might be prejudiced.
