What The Heck Moments:Gamera Edition

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

The whole first film is WTH for me. Is Gammera a destructive force like Gojira or is he just looking for Food and ends up breaking stuff in the process. If that is true then why does he decide to Attack the airport. They are all looking out of the Tower see him come in and fly around and then Wham !!!!!! He touches Down and everything goes up in Flames. At the same time though he wants to save the children.

I always thought it was kind of funny how the Scientist guy in Gamera speaks english to the Eskimo Guy at first, and then the Eskimo guy speaks Japanese to him. Then when the Scientist guy gets to NY He speaks Japanese on TV.

IN GENERAL THE WHOLE SERIES IS WTF.....SAVE THE CHILDREN WHILE MUTILATING OTHER MONSTERS AND KILLING THEM IN GRUESOME WAYS....

POOR GAYOS BEING CARVED UP BY GUIRON OR JIGER BEING SPEARED IN THE HEAD WITH A TOTEM....

How about the geologist at the beginning of Gamera vs. Gyaos (AIP dub) who speaks in a French accent? That one really threw me for a loop.

I just finished watching Shout's Gyaos/Viras two-pack for the first time. There's enough WTF moments on that one disc for their own thread.

Picking just one, I'd have to go with the plan to keep Gyaos grounded. Do we pin him down with harpoons? No. How about shoot him with anaesthetic? No. Maybe a net? No. Well, we could try luring him in with a Las Vegas fountain spouting artificial blood, then spin him on a giant pedestal until he gets dizzy and falls over. {MISSION APPROVED}

It sounds like something straight out of a child's imagination, and in a children's movie that's just what you want. Then there's the whole tone of Gamera vs Viras, which reminds me of an episode of Flipper, but with giant monsters. Great fun.

Let's not forget the 4th Wall Obliterating scene at the end of the film when Gamera plays his own theme song on Zigra's back

Yikes! I'm watching Super Monster now and just finished the scene where the kid is dreaming of Gamera flying past the Space Battleship Yamato, complete with Yamato music theme!

"I must......be dreaming! ..........wish it was real...." :D

Edit: HA! And a little bit later, after the footage from Barugon where Gamera destroys the dam, there's a slam on Godzilla! You see Gamera's feet walking by a fence, and a posterboard for a Godzilla movie falls over, complete with silly music!
