Viras Inspiration

Anyone else think it's possible that Viras could have been inspired by the Martians in H.G. Wells' book, The War of the Worlds? The Martians in the book are huge, lumbering squid-like creatures with beaks like birds, just like Viras. Of course, it could just be coincidence.
