Best way to see Gamera movies?

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

Seriously, if you have enough money and a region free player, buy the R2's of the Showa Gamera series. Their quality beats anything out here in the US, and they include English subtitles to make it better. If not, you could just buy Retromedia's or Alpha Video's crappy discs.

Most people are just mentioning your options for the Showa era. Any Kaiju Eiga fan must, with all absolute seriousness, see the Heisei trilogy directed by Shusuke Kaneko. And you're in luck, really. ADV has released the films in a very affordable, and schnazzy box set costing little over $35's on Amazon.com.

They are NOT the best quality avialable, but they are nothing to complain about, especially for R1 viewers. The pictures are not as sharp as the domestic released, but the DVD's have a stunning array of bonus features that cannot be missed (all of which taken directly from the affirmentioned domestic release). ADV also tossed in some special features of their own, meant for comedy purposes and are good for atleast one viewing, but not much more. Plus accurate subtitles, and dubbing that is not all that bad. If anamorphic enhancements means anything to you, then beware because the ADV release of Gamera, Guardian of the Universe lacks this feature.
