Due to circumstances beyond our control, SciFi Japan has fallen behind on our coverage of the latest figures from the Japanese collectibles company X-Plus Co., Ltd. To get back on schedule, we present a look at both the January and February 2020 lineups with information and more than 200 photos — direct from X-Plus!

The company’s official Shonen-RIC as X-Plus website offers Exclusives and Limited Editions with bonus features or extra pieces not available from other retailers, with shipping on some items also now available to customers in North America, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan. The standard “General Distribution” versions of the figures are sold by stores and online retailers, including SFJ sponsor Anime Jungle. Most X-Plus figures are recommended for fans and collectors ages 15 years and older.

In 1983, Bandai launched the Ultra Collection of soft vinyl figures based on heroes and monsters from the Ultraman franchise. Bandai and X-Plus are now teaming up for the Ultra Daikaiju 5000* Series, a new figure line featuring Ultra Monsters that were not included in the earlier Ultra Collection.

The first wave of Ultra Daikaiju 5000 Series releases contains two figures, including the Electric Wave Monster Beakon that appeared in RETURN OF ULTRAMAN Episode 21: THE MONSTER CHANNEL (怪獣チャンネル, Kaijū Chan’neru). The figure is produced in scale with the older line, and comes with the traditional tagged character card.

This “Japan Exclusive Item” is sold online by Shonen-RIC and Premium Bandai. It is not available from retail stores.

The Daikaiju Series figures of Alien Baltan Jr. (first released in September 2014) and his robot Billgamo (from March 2015) have been reissued in a 2-figure set based on RETURN OF ULTRAMAN Episode 41: REVENGE OF ALIEN BALTAN JR. (バルタン星人Jrの復讐, Barutan Seijin Jr no Fukushū).

Alien Baltan Jr. is sculpted with the stocky build and blunted pincers that differentiated Jr. from the first generation Baltans. The figure’s eyes and crest are molded in transparent plastic for the built in light up gimmick.

The eyes and parts of the nose of the Robot Monster Billgamo are also have a built in light-up feature.

First released in August 2013, the Toho Daikaiju Series: Baragon (1965) Standing Pose figure has been reissued with new fighting coloration.

Based on the underground monster’s appearance in FRANKENSTEIN VS BARAGON (フランケンシュタイン対地底怪獣バラゴン, Furankenshutain Tai Chitei Kaijū Baragon, aka FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD, 1965), Baragon is sculpted in the dynamic standing pose he displayed when facing off against Frankenstein. The updated paint scheme replicates Baragon’s appearance during his fierce battle with Frankenstein at the film’s climax.

Recognized as the world’s greatest Godzilla sculptor, Yuji Kaida has worked on the Toho films and produced hugely popular collectibles including model kits, statues, toys, books and the S.H. MonsterArts line. His latest X-Plus figure is based on THE RETURN OF GODZILLA (ゴジラ, Gojira, 1984, a.k.a. GODZILLA 1985), and depicts Godzilla as he battled the Super-X in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district.

As with the other “Yuji Sakai Modeling Collection” figures, Godzilla 1984 will be manufactured from the master mold in order to reproduce in soft vinyl as much as much detail as possible from Yuji Sakai’s sculpt. Sakai has also supervised the painting of the figure.
