Godzilla Towers Over the Hotel Gracery Shinjuku, Tokyo — Monuments Series 5
Author: Daisuke Ishizuka
Godzilla destroyed Shinjuku ward of Tokyo in 1984’s THE RETURN OF GODZILLA (ゴジラ, Gojira). Godzilla did battle with Mecha-King Ghidorah and demolished the rebuilt Shinjuku again in 1991. In April 2015, Godzilla appeared at in the Kabukicho area in Shinjuku. A Godzilla head was set atop the 8th floor of the Hotel Gracery Shinjuku. The head is a 12m (approximately 39 feet) tall and scaled to a full body Godzilla that would stand approximately 40m (131 feet) in height.
There is a café on the 8th floor of the hotel. Café and hotel guests can visit the 8th floor and approach the Godzilla head. There you can find reliefs based on GODZILLA (1954), THE RETURN OF GODZILLA and GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA (ゴジラvsモスラ, Gojira Tai Mosura, 1992). They were designed by Nobuyuki Yasumaru, who was a member of team Tsuburaya and an art designer for Toho movies. He well known as the creator of high quality monster suits for Godzilla, Gorosaurus, Anguirus, King Ghidorah, Kamoebas, Kamacuras, Hedorah, Megalon, Mechagodzilla and others.
The production of the Godzilla head was supervised by Koichi Kawakita, special effects director for the Heisei Godzilla films. He passed away in 2014 at 72 years of age, and the Godzilla head was his last work. For me, it is memorial monument to Mr. Kawakita.
The 118.5m stretch of the street leading from the Hotel Gracery was named as Godzilla Road in 2016. The length of the street is the same as the height of Godzilla in SHIN GODZILLA (シン・ゴジラ, Shin Gojira, 2016).
Godzilla conquers Shinjuku once again.
