Godzilla Morning on IFC

Postby lhb412 » Sun Oct 21, 2018 12:48 am

This surprised me!

Apparently it's a new thing: Sunday mornings on IFC. Tomorrow (10/21) is Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster. Next week it'll be Son of Godzilla and Godzilla, King of the Monsters!

Just my speculation, but I bet it’s related to Criterion having the streaming/broadcast rights to those films now...

^That seems to be the library they're using. The commercial I saw featured only clips from films they have.

This surprised me also. A bigger surprise was that it was the english subtitled version in HD and it looked great. Looking forward to seeing more Godzilla on IFC as this is one of my favorite channels on Dish.

International version of Invasion of Astro Monster has the classic Engish dub but retains all the Japanese titles and the original version of Miss Namakawa's letter. Throws me for a leap every time one comes up!

These are making the rounds again on IFC. The English subtitled version of All Monsters Attack/Godzilla’s Revenge was on this morning with airings scheduled again this week along with Destroy All Monsters and Rodan.

How many Godzilla titles did the IFC Channel aquire to broadcast? They’re even showing Godzilla vs. Megalon this week. With War of the Gargantuas next week.

It's the Janus Films package:

Godzilla (1954), Godzilla KOTM, Godzilla Raids Again (Japanese), Rodan (Jpn), Mothra vs. Godzilla (Jpn), Ghidorah (Jpn), Invasion of Astro-Monster (English), The War of the Gargantuas (English - export version), Son of Godzilla (Jpn), DAM (Jpn), All Monsters Attack (Jpn), Godzilla vs. Megalon (Eng?), Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (Eng), Terror of Mechagodzilla (Eng)

All films are visually the Japanese versions (except KOTM) and the few in English are the unedited "international dubs." The one exception to the latter is "Astro-Monster," which is a bit hard to explain. Basically it's the classic American-produced English audio restored to the Japanese version's full length. All scenes that weren't originally dubbed are left in Japanese, or English, in the case of the one unused Nick Adams line.

Son of Godzilla is the only film left that they haven’t aired yet. Both Rodan and then Destroy All Monsters starts in an hour.

Ha! Nothing like turning on your TV and being surprised that Terror of Mechagodzilla is on!

(Katsura and Ichinose are on their date right now)

Is this really rated MA for language, sexuality and violence? Surely you are mistaken IFC. That shot of fake cyborg breasts can't be enough to necessitate that!

Nudity is a pretty big no-no... I'm sure boobs are enough to warrant TV-MA. I wonder if the severity of the rating is because you wouldn't expect any of those things in your typical Godzilla movie. Even if the nudity were cut or blurred, the violence and language are still pretty extreme for what's ostensibly a kid's movie.

I had seen the Bob Conn TOMG release at a very young age, but of course didn't remember how intense the aliens were, and after many years of watching the *edited* paramount VHS, when I was able to see the unedited version again via the classic media dvd, and then the original Japanese version on top of that, it was a little surprising. The rating on TV is certainly warranted. I admit, i made the mistake of showing my kids Smog Monster probably way to early, but definitely held off on TOMG until they were older.
There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

Pretty cool to either come home from work or wake up in the morning to a Godzilla movie. War of the Gargantuas tomorrow morning.

Watched Gargantuas, this must be the International Dub as it was nowhere as good as the classic AIP dub.
