I wonder why all the fan designs for Bagan spin-off from the 90s Super Godzilla design. You think some people would take a little inspiration from the chimeric version from the original Return of Godzilla script, which always seemed a bit more interesting to me.

Probably because that version isn't really what Toho would even consider "Bagan" since the Super Godzilla design is what appeared in official media.

The possibilites for Muppet-based kaiju seem limitless. Big Bird as Rodan. Tickle-Me-Mothra. Hedorah the Grouch. The mind boggles.

Sometimes I think Disney just needs to give The Muppets back to Jim Henson Studios. Not everything Muppets needs to be theatrically released, telemovies shown somewhere on television would have been great too. Things Disney should have done with the Muppets years ago -- Pigs in Space: The Movie (even if it was just a telemovie) when riffing on JJ Abrams Star Trek the lens flare cannon jokes write themselves! Muppet Avengers!!! --- Kermit as Iron-Frog, the Swedish Chef as Thor, Sam the Eagle as Captain America, Miss Piggy as Black Widow, etc. These things wouldn't need to approach movie length -- a 45 minute special premiering once a year would have been ample to keep the Muppets in the public eye (along with repeat airings of previous specials)

A Muppets spin on Pacific Rim would be hilarious, as would a Muppets version of WB's Monsterverse -- I can just see Gonzo's version of the "Let them fight" line and it could be great.

As cool as that artwork is Bagan has always looked like a generic Ultraman kaiju of the week to me. If he were ever actually depicted onscreen I guarantee he would be a disappointment because he would never be as powerful as he was in the game. Also Destroyah is close enough to the Bagan design imo. I'm old enough to have actually played SuperGodzilla when it came out and even then I thought he was lame.

I think that devious glee on his face is far more disturbing than being surrounded by the Mothra family.

I agree, Bagan works better as a "never was" creature....

A fascinating find, thanks for posting that. Some of Saperstein's rhetoric brings to mind Harlan Ellison's lack of support for DGA protests against colorization (which he hated*), his reasoning being that directors had been screwing with writer's work for decades.

*(Harlan Ellison hating something, what a shock)

I wonder if the Clifford V. Harrington that wrote that piece is the same Cliff Harrington that appeared as Al, the helicopter pilot in King Kong vs. Godzilla (he also dubbed the voice of the other pilot in the Japanese version) and sometimes dubber for Frontier Enterprises. It almost has to be, right?

Nice catch, it most certainly is!

Then because of that movie experience, I began writing for the American Cinematographer magazine, which was published by the American Society of Cinematographers, the ASC cameramen. I began submitting so many articles they made me a contributing editor.
