That suit recreation is just so impressive. Honestly, Legendary should try to get it from Toho to promote their new movie. You know, have him walk the red carpet with the actors and such.

TOHO is making some kind of film using the new Shodaigoji suit! The film will come out on either 1/11/19 or 11/1/19! This looks like a crazy mix of styles from across all the eras of Godzilla! We are going to see Godzilla in a suit again

We're not really expecting anything, at least I'm not. I'm under the impression it's probably a few minutes long.

There are precedents for Toho doing something like this.

Monster Planet of Godzilla was an amusement park ride that debuted in 1994 and featured new in-ride footage of Godzilla, Mothra and Rodan using the recent Heisei suits and props.

In 2006, Toho commissioned Koichi Kawakita to shoot new monster footage for Godzilla-themed pachinko parlor game machines, using a lot of suits from the Heisei and Millennium films.

This may be the first time Toho has completely recreated an entire Godzilla suit for something like this. That new Shodaigoji suit looks awesome and I'm glad that they didn't just trot out the Kiryugoji suit and try to pass it off as a Shodaigoji recreation. :wink:

Netflix now has a page for Planet Eater as well as their own dubbed trailer.

Honestly, despite the most tepid response from Godzilla fans I think this anime will age fairly well. Anime fandom is so entrenched all over the world that it's an audience that will continually stumble upon these movies who aren't necessarily the types to seek out the live-action Godzilla movies. The fact that they are tailored more to anime fans then they are to kaiju fans is... probably a good thing, in this respect?

A 2-meter-high suit made to look like the first Godzilla model is displayed Friday at the Eiji Tsuburaya Museum. The museum opened earlier the same day in Sukagawa, Fukushima Prefecture, where the late director of the "Godzilla" films was from. The venue features about 50 figures that appeared in his special-effects-heavy films and television programs, including "Mothra" and "King Ghidorah.

Japanese-language websites have reported that Legendary Entertainment’s license to use the Godzilla IP will soon expire. But Legendary retains the rights as long as it continues to make Godzilla films.

Toho is an investor in Legendary’s “Godzilla: King of Monsters,” which is due for a late May release through Warner Bros., and also in Legendary’s “Pokemon Detective Pikachu,” which releases worldwide from early next month.

The company’s name has also been linked to the 2020 film “Monster Hunters,” based on a Capcom game, and to Bad Robot’s live action remake of Japanese hit “Your Name.”

TOHO established the TOHO International company in 1953, but the company has mostly been involved in real estate, and the company has only earned a total of US$12,000 in the past three years.

... here's a crazy idea I've been ruminating about what with Toho insinuating themselves into the global Godzilla brand: after Godzilla vs. Kong Toho essentially takes over the series. They'd still be co-productions with American and Chinese sides of the equation, but Toho would be, essentially, in the driver's seat or as close to the driver's seat as they can be.

Also, why not much cheaper films? Shin Godzilla and The Host are two of the best monster movies of the 2000s and they were both made for under the equivalent of 20 million dollars in today's money.

Reports coming out of those are disappointing to say the LEAST.

There's going to be one in Houston in June and given what I've seen and heard out of the ones in LA and NYC, I've gone from thinking I'll definitely drive the half hour to check it out to absolutely NO WAY.
A couple books, a handful of posters, some 8x10 pictures of Godzilla, on a glorified endcap.

It was nice to see dedications to Banno and Nakajima at the end of KotM's credits. There's a real feeling of love for the Toho movies throughout it, and that just caps it off.

Sorry, but the Nakajima credit in GKOTM film is absolutely laughable. The movie, and the industry it represents, did everything it could to make suit-actors like him extinct. The coffee commercial honors his legacy better.
The new Gamera will be worse than Super Monster.

The great thing about this commercial, and the short made for the museum exhibition, is that there's clearly a desire at Toho to preserve the old ways, even if it's not the primary method employed in, say, a new film. Hats off to them!

Japan Quietly Launches Production Incentives

The page didn't include the figure of $1.7 million (¥180 million) in available funds, which is to be split between multiple projects. An announcement of the program went up on the site on May 31, half-way through the application period, which ends on Monday (June 10).

A representative for VIPO told The Hollywood Reporter that the reason for the short application window was because the program is not so much an incentive, but a research project to look at the effects of incentives.

"In line with that, if at least one production isn't approved, we don't think a budget would be allocated in the next fiscal year," the representative said. "In order to be able to take applications from many productions, if there was one production already in motion, we moved quickly to allow submission." This suggests that there was a project identified before the process began.

The lack of information in languages other than Japanese is down to the prioritization of preparing the application process, according to the rep. One producer was told during the process that no application forms in any language were yet available.

VIPO is administering the project in cooperation with the Japan Film Commission (JFC) and ad agency Quaras. The involvement of the agency is reportedly due to minimum capital requirements for a company receiving government funds above a certain amount.

JFC chair Mako Tanaka says the rushed launch was due to the final decision happening at the end of the fiscal year (March 31), and the program is looking "to have a test case and see if it really has an impact on the local economy."

The chronic labor shortage in Japan means the country is less interested in attracting major productions just for job creation, according to Tanaka.

"It's different to other Asian countries. They [the industry and government] are more interested in selling Japanese content and IP overseas. They're not desperate for more jobs in the film industry, though it does help local economies in terms of hotels and restaurants," says Tanaka.

The focus of the program appears to be to guide filmmakers away from Tokyo, where most big productions want to shoot, but where authorities are still loath to permit major disruptions, toward rural areas as a way to boost tourism.

Daren Afshar, who runs boutique outfit Winery Productions, believes if tourism is the goal, the program should be administered by the Japan National Tourism Organization.

Afshar, who has spent years lobbying the government to do more to attract Hollywood productions to Japan, is also unimpressed by the size of the program. "For the third-largest economy in the world, something this small is embarrassing," he says.

As for the upcoming MonsterVerse film, any announcements regarding it would be said by Warner Bros., though sadly the studio will reportedly be absent from Comic-Con this year.

TOHO has certainly made greater strides in recent history to be better connected with Godzilla fans outside Japan. The company recently launched the first ever dedicated English-language website on the series, and brought pop-up versions of its famous Godzilla store to the U.S. in various locations. Although Godzilla: King of the Monsters received lukewarm reviews from a number of critics, that hasn't stopped the overall franchise from flourishing. TOHO has big plans for Godzilla, so it will be very interesting to see what the kaiju is up to five years from now.
