What an awesome time.

When you walked in, they were just constantly playing Godzilla trailers, commercials, clips, music videos, etc on the screen. There was a little comic shop that had a small display set up and a cardboard city was set up in front of the screen.

Before everything started, Godzilla came out and attacked the city!

Then he was soon joined by King Kong and they had a fight in the city. I have a video of the fight, but I haven't watched it yet, and it'll take me a while till I upload it.

Then they screened King Kong (more on that in recently watched movies).

Then we had a surprise Skype interview with Travis Beacham, one of the writers of Pacific Rim (more on that in the Pac Rim thread).

Then they screened Inframan (movies thread)

Then they gave us some background on the next movie, and told us more about Alamo Drafthouse upcoming events, including a "Video Nasties" series where they will be screening movies that have only ever been released on VHS. And they gave us a pitch on the Houston Film Critics' Society. Probably the 'wekeast' segment of the evening, but a worth bathroom break.

Then they screened a bootleg tape of Pulgasari, as a middle-finger to North Korea given recent events.

Then they did a giveaway. Some kid who had a custom Destroy All Drafthouses shirt got a game, another kid got a comic collection, and then there was a trivia question about the movie Merian C. Cooper produced before King Kong starring Fay Wray (The Most Dangerous Game).

Then they put up a killer graphic on the screen.


And they had people look under their tables and if you had a thing that said "Tshirt" you won a shirt of that. I WON A SHIRT!

And if you have a thing that said "poster" you won a signed by GDT Pac Rim poster.

And they had tons of extra regular Pac Rim posters, so I got one of those too after everything was over and I just gently asked if they had any extras.

Then they screened Gojira.

Great time.

DESTROY ALL DRAFTHOUSES is coming back to Houston May 24, 2019! They’re showing the original Japanese cut of Godzilla along with a “mystery Godzilla sequel” that’s guaranteed to “deliver the kaiju carnage” at 9pm at LaCenterra.

I got my ticket already!

Got my ticket too. Definitely feel like the secret movie may be KOTM, but don't want to get my hopes TOO high since that's not what they're promising. As long as it's not Shin or 2014 (since I've already seen both of those in a theater) I don't really care much what it is...because seeing any of them the way Alamo Drafthouse presents things will be a treat.

So in addition to the DADH show may 24, the very next morning on may 25 will be a Godzilla vs Megalon cereal party! I got tickets to take my kids! I've always wanted to take them to one and having their first Alamo Saturday morning cereal party be a Godzilla movie is even better!

Got tickets to the NOVA Alamo Drafthouse's double feature of Godzilla '54 and GMK. I've seen '54 in theaters before, but it'll be cool to finally see GMK on the big screen. Wish my Alamo was doing that Megalon cereal party, I'd be there in a flash.

I'm also going to attempt to take my kids to see Godzilla vs. Megalon. My son is a little young, but when I asked my daughter if she wanted to go (she's 5, she can definitely behave for a 70 minute movie) he BEGGED me to also go, and we're gonna give it a shot.

I'd love to see GMK on the big screen. Same with the Kiryu films.

Unfortunately, my Drafthouse is going to show the 54 movie one day this month and Shin a few days later.

Too bad the NoVa GMK screening will be from Blu-ray, as Sony doesn't have a DCP of it, and that theater never had film projectors.

The second "secret" film turned out to be Destroy All Monsters! It was just the media blasters blu ray projected, but even for all it's typical "Toho bluray master" issues, it was still a lot of fun to see on such a big screen! I always notice new things in these films when seeing them on an actual movie screen for the first time. I will admit I was shocked at how good a bluray looks projected on a full movie screen. I mean, yeah it wasn't the sharpest image and the contrast left something to be desired, but those are issues inherent in the transfer. But I couldn't see any serious artifacting, noticeable edge enhancement, or any other issues that would be purely based on the fact it was a bluray and not a proper DCP. I've known for a long time that 1080p and theatrical 2k were only a hair's breadth apart but to see it with my own eyes was pretty cool.

The show was fun. They raffled off a couple books (a gorgo comic and a copy of "Godzilla on My Mind") and the manager who MC'd the event had some interesting stuff to say. The most interesting was that they were only able to show DAM thanks to the recent criterion/Janus deal. He mentioned that Toho was notoriously difficult to book screening me through but now criterion/Janus has theatrical rights to all the films they've acquired and it is much much easier. He mentioned wanting to do a monthly kaiju film and that this sold out show gave him the ammunition he needed to hopefully push that through!

He ALSO mentioned that criterion would be putting out a box set of all their Godzilla films this fall... no idea how accurate his info is, but my fingers are crossed!
