Mothra (1961) Blu-ray steelbook from Mill Creek

Postby lhb412 » Fri Apr 26, 2019 4:44 pm

Coming July 9 from Mill Creek! Includes both US and Japanese cuts, commentary track from the Icons of Toho DVD set, trailers and photo gallery (those last two weren't on the DVD, right?).

And, of course, fancy packaging using the original US poster and promotional stills. Nifty!

That's a great looking case, definitely picking this up in July. I am surprised that Sony isn't putting MOTHRA out on blu-ray themselves, although this release sounds like it will be better than what we might have seen from Sony.

I was confused about the cover until I realized there is a plastic case around the steelbook that has the Shobijin on it.

I'll pick it up for sure, I'll just have low expectations for the quality considering it's Mill Creek.

Very appreciative to get any kaiju film on Blu Ray in NA. However...I just wish there was a standard packaging option, I've never been into steelbooks.

If they're just using Sony's materials it should be good.

Sony's materials are far from HD quality.

Um, huh?

You can read right here all about Sony's 2008/2009 restoration process on both English and Japanese versions of Mothra. But here's an especially relevant quote from Michael Friend, who oversaw the restorations:

"We have made high definition digital masters, so that the films can be distributed on DVD and perhaps, eventually, Blu-ray. We’re sensitive to the fact that the new media change the experience of the films, and we believe that the versions we have made for digital media are a good approximation of the look and sound of the film in a theatrical context."

The same hi-def transfer was released on Blu-Ray in Germany this month. Here's a screenshot from that if you'd care to see for yourself, although note that it's rendered as a jpg and not at its original resolution.

Watching their 2009 DVD right now, and while there's always room for improvement the transfer itself looks quite good, even upscaled. I imagine it'll look much better in HD, much like Sony's recent Battle in Outer Space release, which suffered from some native print damage but was otherwise a decent transfer.

As I thought, there were no trailers or image gallery here. Mill Creek rustled those up themselves, which just goes to show how serious they are taking this release!

Fantastic news! Ten years after Mothra was released on North American DVD for the first time, it's finally hitting BRD on this continent! Sony's DVD is still totally watchable but I'll be happy to support this release and see the original Mothra in HD, and I'm always glad when theatrical trailers get preserved on home media. The packaging looks great too.

Why low expectations? Mill Creek delivered terrific A/V quality on their Gamera and Daimajin BRDs. Plus, like H-Man said, Sony put a lot of effort into their HD restoration so Mill Creek is working with good elements.

Yeah, I saw the DCP of Mothra (that I think was also sourced from this restoration) at the Alamo Drafthouse a few years ago. It was gorgeous! And it was glorious to see all tsuburaya’s effect work up on the big screen!

I remembered seeing this movie on television. I remembered liking this movie. I hope to get the blu-ray some time in the future.

There is no way that DVD from the 3 pack was remastered for HD. It looks good for a DVD remastering job, but it is most definitely not HD worthy.

I'm curious if this is the same source Rifftrax used for their live event a couple years back? They *said* it was sourced form a new HD print? I mean, I'm not a great judge, EVERYTHING in the theater looks great to me.

Also, for those looking to build their streaming film library, Mothra is also available on Vudu, I just added it to my collection.

You clearly don’t understand what you’re talking about. The restoration was done from the film elements. The article on scifijapan, linked by H-man above, clearly states the elements were scanned at 2K (slightly higher than 1080p resolution) and then digitally restored. From this restoration the new SD master (likely 480p) was created for the DVD. Now they’ve gone back and created a 1080p HD master from the restoration. There is some question (from the other board) as to whether an even newer (possibly 4K) restoration was undertaken, but either way, they absolutely have a proper source from which to create a stunning Blu Ray.

It's just exciting to have another nice kaiju Blu-ray release to look forward to. There's been a smorgasbord of genre films being released in the last couple years, but few kaiju movies after all of Sony's Godzilla films and Mill Creek's Gamera and Daimajin releases.

I would imagine so; I mean, why not? I recall the Rifftrax showing looking pretty great.
I'll definitely pick this one up. I think I like steelbooks, and the artwork is nifty; and hey, a new blu-ray release in a fairly timely manner! Hopefully audiences looking at KotM will take notice of this release.

Two weeks before Mothra makes her Hollywood debut in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, pre-orders for this BRD steelbook of the original Mothra have made it the 14th-bestselling movie or TV disc on Amazon. Their current price is $14.89.

If this release is successful for Mill Creek I wouldn't mind them going through the rest of Sony's Kaiju catalog. Not every film deserves a special edition steelbook release, but, say, GMK could use an improved English subtitle track, right?

Forget the subtitles. GMK needs an all new transfer. Desperately.

So is anyone other than Amazon selling this? I don't feel like paying $6 for shipping plus tax to get it from them.

It's a regular retail release, not some kind of exclusive. All the usual disc retailers?

So since this is getting released, and BIOS has been released, does that mean that H-man is just around the corner? Food for thought.
