The turnaround time between the theatrical and Netflix releases wasn't quite as severe as I'd feared. Given the breadth of the Netflix release, it actually seems impressive. How many subtitle tracks would you have to prepare for a wide release? And how far in advance would you have to prepare?

I still wish the movie looked more interesting. I'm actually more excited about the release date than about the film itself, if that makes any sense.

Well that's cool, but why wasn't it part of any of Netflix's Janaury promotional material a couple of weeks ago? --Oh well, it's a nice surprise. Has any information been revealed about an English dub? Just curious, still going to watch it no matter what.

Interesting that Netflix is listing the trilogy as a series with the first 'episode' 'coming soon,' as opposed to listing each installment separately.

BTW, you can watch the trailer subbed or dubbed on Netflix proper now.

Of course, it's just a minute or so of footage and it's almost all Haruo talking, but I think the dub is shaping up to be pretty good!

I keep all movies featuring Toho chronological, whether they're Japanese or American produced, then have a separate Daiei section.

I'm wondering, if I end up not being really into the anime, whether or not I'll bother buying it. With the live action flicks, I feel compelled as a collector, even when I don't care for them. I don't know if "theatrically released motion picture" will be my standard, or if the fact that it's animated will make me think of it as a secondary medium, like the novels, comics, or TV projects, and thus optional.

I wonder how/when/if these will be released on home video? I know Netflix can take their sweet time - if they get around to it in the first place, that is. This is Godzilla though, so I'd think they will.

This is pure speculation on my part, but all three films will be out by the end of this year/beginning of the next, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters hits early next year, with Godzilla vs. Kong arriving a year later. It would certainly make sense for Netflix to ride that wave and get the anime trilogy out on Blu-ray sometime during 2019.

^Netflix has done similar coproduction deals with Polygon before, but that hasn't stopped Section 23 from licensing Knights of Sidonia and Ajin from Polygon for North American home video releases. Hopefully the same thing'll hold true here.

I wonder if the theatrical release for the next installment will fare better than the first? It was a worldwide Netflix release, right? Including Japan? If so, by the time #2 comes out every Japanese person with Netflix access, a passing interest in Godzilla or anime, and an hour and a half to kill will probably have seen the movie and (conceivably) be more primed to seeing the next chapter.

... unless they hated it, of course!


(of course, it seems pretty apparent that Netflix wanted a Godzilla anime series and Toho managed to suss out a deal which had them break it into movie chunks so they could have a little extra gravy for themselves - Netflix still labels it as a series and the movies 'episodes')

I don't think there's a lot of incentive to see a movie in theaters you know will be on Netflix in two months. I feel like this theatrical stuff is merely a side-show release to squeeze out a few extra dollars from it.

I'm not sure how it fared, but I know this is more the norm than it is in other places. Many short films and items that would be straight to home media or streaming in the US for example are released theatrically in Japan. I'm thinking of the entire Yamato 2199 & 2202 anime series. Released theatrically in japan, then just a few weeks later, released on Blu Ray. Also I was shocked to find out all the Tinkerbell movies from Disney that were DVD releases in the US, ALL had theatrical releases in Japan.
