The movie formerly known as God Particle which Paramount renamed "2017 Cloverfield Movie" has been rescheduled from October 27, 2017 to February 2, 2018. Hopefully that will give them enough time to come up with a better new title than just "2018 Cloverfield Movie."

It's bad news if that happens. 10 Cloverfield Lane was one of Paramount's few box office successes from the past two years. That studio is in crisis, especially since the Transformers franchise has lost so much of its box office power, and now they're reportedly willing to part ways with one of their last reliable franchises? If this comes to pass, I am genuinely afraid that it will be a precursor to Viacom selling Paramount's assets to Disney.

I actually find this quite sad. Each of the three Cloverfield 'follow-ups' started as its own project before being given a vague franchise retrofit. It really speaks to the lack of confidence the studio has in new IP.

I've only seen bad reviews of this except in some of the kaiju/scifi community. SOME. Like, the fandom.

I've been fairly out of sync with the fandom on many recent releases so it will be interesting to see how this one fares.

Movies like this are the reason I don't like the current thumbs up/down system on Netflix because it was decidedly...okay, very much a 3/5. With only a few exceptions the acting is great, and the protagonist in particular lends a lot of credibility to the emotional side of the story. The script doesn't always give them enough to work with though. The overall tension and drama of the scenario works well, but there's a lack of imagination in its attempts at depicting 'high strangeness'. Most of the major setpieces feel like watered down versions of scenes you've seen done better in other movies. Also, while the larger plot can keep you guessing for a while, the progress of each individual scene becomes too easy to predict the moment it starts. It feels like an expensive TV movie, or a b-movie with actors who sometimes manage to drag it up a level. I can see why Paramount didn't want to risk pinning an expensive theatrical release and marketing campaign on it.

Oh, and the attempts to reverse-engineer this movie into the Cloververse stuck out like a sore thumb. Seriously, does anyone besides JJ Abrams care about Slusho in the slightest?
