Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)

Universal just unveiled the official title and first poster for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the follow-up to 2015's Jurassic World and the fifth entry in the Jurassic series overall.



Directed by J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls), the film once again stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, along with series veterans B.D. Wong and Jeff Goldblum as well as newcomers James Cromwell, Justice Smith, and Toby Jones. It opens one year from today on June 22, 2018.

I found Jurassic World underwhelming: disliked the characters and thought the dinosaur action (and I'm all up for dinosaur action) was bellow par.

That being said, a new director and the addition of Goldblum makes me interested - and if they're serious about more animatronic dinosaurs? I'm hoping this one'll elicit the same enthusiasm in me that Jurassic World dis for the general audience.

What's funny is this takes me back to when I was 4 years old (1980). I thought all movies with Dinosaurs had to have volcanoes in them .

But I'm not EXCITED.


If that makes any sense.

I enjoyed World in theaters but have only revisited it once since, it already hadn't really "aged" well, and I've never had a desire to give it another spin.

I remember in Crichton's original novel, that Isla Nublar was volcanic, however this has not been even hinted at, or seen in any of the films up until now...Might not set well with those only familiar with the film franchise.

Yeah, that sweet practical dinosaur effects action has me a bit excited.

I just hope Universal doesn't digitally replace them all with CGI (which they've done before).


I'll be honest though: I'm slightly encouraged and I kinda think they will allow the animatronics to be in there...I think many of Jurassic World's shortcomings fall at Colin Trevorrow's feet. Not only is Jurassic World a pretty unimpressive film from a directorial standpoint, but The Book of Henry has gotten reviews like, "There’s the kind of bad movie that just sits there, unfolding with grimly predictable monotony. Then there’s the kind where the badness expands and metastasizes, taking on a jaw-dropping life of its own, pushing through to ever-higher levels of garishness. The Book of Henry ... is of the latter, you’ve-got-to-see-it-to-disbelieve-it variety." Hopefully, Bayona is more capable. I think he will prove to be, as A Monster Calls was good, as was The Orphanage.

Well, the trailer has finally arrived:




I am getting a "Lost World" vib, from both 1997 and the 1925 silent film. Apparently, this volcano will be the antagonist of the feature. I don't know about this, but then I didn't think another movie was necessary in the first place.

Yeah, the trailer didn’t really sell the movie for me.

But the behind the scenes stuff they put out before the trailer totally did. Awesome Winston-esque practical dinos? YES PLEASE!

Plus, it’s Jurassic Park. Like I’m NOT going to see it?

I'm also disappointed by the direction this film seems to be taking. The way the last one wound up I was hoping for some radical new dino designs (as BD Wong's character stated outright that what we have on screen isn't likely what real dinos looked like, and research has come a long way since the original JP).

So other than Pteranodons, and possibly the Mosasour, how are Dinosaurs going to get off the Island? (themselves I mean as Malcolm alleges). I mean I cant see T-Rex swimming across 100 miles of ocean to get to the mainland...

my guess is they don't and all the Dinosaurs die at the hands of the volcano.

Hopefully it's just a poorly thought out trailer, but this looks like a huge mess. They're just shoving more stuff on the screen: more dinosaurs, more explosions, more running around. More, more, more. But it currently fails to provide a compelling reason to care. Between this and the Pacific Rim Uprising trailer, I'm really starting to worry about the shape of a post-Thomas Tull Legendary Pictures; their movies are starting to look very Michael Bay in a China-baiting sort of way.

I like the premise. Instead of people running from dinosaurs and trying to escape the island, it's people trying to help dinosaurs escape the island! That kind of fresh premise justifies another sequel.

The CGI doesn't look any better than it did in the last movie, though, and the action looks really silly. That lawyer-eating T. rex takes a break from fleeing an erupting volcano to save some humans from other predators for the third time. I do like Jurassic World, which was also very silly, so I hope this can be at least as fun as that. It's just a shame that this probably won't come any closer to the quality of the Spielberg-directed entries.

The ideological conflict over whether the dinosaurs should be saved or left to die could make for an interesting story. That makes the beginning of the trailer much more interesting than the second half, which is just part of an action scene.

It has dinosaurs. There is currently a severe lack of dinosaur movies, so I'm in. It'll be trash, but at least it'll probably be fun trash.

Problem is, I found Pratt and Howard's characters (two actors I like) to be really unlikable in the first film. That was the biggest reason I found Jurassic World disappointing. People say the characters in Godzilla '14 were bland? I'd rather bland that actively annoying.

I'd rather we just had new characters for this one. The dinosaurs are the stars, anyway.

Count me in the camp who's unimpressed by the trailer and really disappointed by that. There are some good things I see - new dinosaurs, returning animatronics (yay!!), and some potentially interesting plot threads - but the first Jurassic World had the first & third things too, and it did almost nothing with them. I see little indication that Fallen Kingdom will be anything more than another glorified, cliched action/adventure movie with monsters. Hopefully, hopefully, I'm proven wrong.
I miss when this franchise was revolutionizing mainstream understanding of dinosaurs, with real beauty and suspense.
