Star Wars: ROGUE ONE December 16, 2016

I liked it... but it's kinda weird that it's like the mirror opposite of The Force Awakens in terms of flaws and virtues, right? TFA's plot was a rehash of what we'd seen before and it was a bit half-baked and it didn't really add anything to the Star Wars mythos but it was thoroughly entertaining and exciting and was stuffed with instantly likable and charismatic characters that you immediately accept will be as iconic to kids today as Luke/Han/Leia/Darth were to you as a kid. Rogue One's characters are much, much more subdued (but probably make more sense in their motivation and arcs) and at points the movie drags but at the same time it opens up the Star Wars universe, providing interesting new details and insights into the world and gives the audience a different perspective that I think just enhances your appreciation of what you've already seen instead of just coasting on your love of the previous thing.

Considering how much money they probably had to pay to use , they probably wanted to make the most out of it. I think it worked fine. Yeah, there were some angles where you could tell it was CGI, but other angles looked good. They've come a long way since Tron Legacy.

The last five minutes of this movie are the most fanboy-pandering and pathetic in recent memory.

All around bad. Probably dodged a bullet with Edwards on Godzilla, I can't take more of his maudlin, serious character work.

Watched the opening of Star Wars ('77) last night just for grins. It was a neat experience and felt like it had much more weight to both Vader's and Leia's dialogue and motivations. Rogue One succeeded in actually adding depth to the original film, a feat not to be taken lightly! It may not be perfect, but I've got to give props to R1 for that.

Now I really need to see it again! Hopefully tonight if I get done with work at a decent time.

Just kind of irritated. I made it almost two days...almost...until finding a video on Youtube under the guise of "Rogue One Ending Explained" (My bad I guess because I knew what it all meant...was just curious)..but anyway it quickly descended into speculation that Chirrut Îmwe and Baze Malbus were gay, and oddly enough never explained the ending of the film. We had this with Poe & Finn in Force Awakens, now this garbage. I mean if people want to be whatever in real life, that is their choice, they have that right. However...I wish the pandering and baseless speculation, especially in ficiton and in media would stop. There is nothing more than what you see onscreen. It just saddens me that in 2016 (soon to be 2017), that two men cant be friends anymore, the idea that... you cant have a friend that is "Closer than a brother"...because that means you are gay. Man I must have been so gay from Kindergarten throughout Highschool. I don't remember when I stopped being gay, probably when I started dating girls/women. Anyway, I just sent out notice to all my male friends that we are no longer friends. We can go to the same places, and do the same things, but we cant do any of that together, because then we are gay according to current social standards, apparently

Also I guess I cant watch any youtube videos anymore ever again.

^ There really aren't many (any?) gay characters in these types of films, at least not any who get actual emphasis on their relationships - so it's partially just people wanting to see themselves reflected on the screen and projecting. But there are also real examples of creators intending a character to be gay and obscuring it or having the material censored as not to offend foreign audience (well, domestic audience members, too). Combine those two factors and you've got a lot of eagle-eyed lgbtq nerds playing Agent Mulder and scouring their media intake for gay clues.

I'd say this would end when we there is more representation in films, but with Hollywood's reliance on foreign box office, including many countries that are less than gay friendly, I think this'll be the new normal for a while.

... oh, and there's the Xena factor, where creators began to include gay themes once it became apparent that there was this huge gay following for the show.

I certainly think Oscar Issac added a bit of emphasis in his performance that was entirely his own.

Poe Dameron talks and acts exactly like my youngest brother (who is gay) so that character's nature was obvious to me. Finn clearly had the hots for Rey though.



I will hopefully be seeing Rogue One this weekend.

^ Maybe its because i have never watched Rebels, but i thought the scenes with Saw Gerrara would have been better off on the cutting floor. Perhaps if i had more context on his character it would have been better, but 90% of my criticisms of the movie are related to the first act.

I feel like this is the first Star Wars movie that's really just mediocre, with equal parts good and BAD fumbling around each other struggling to make something work and sadly often (especially in the first half) failing. The second half saved the movie for me.

I thought it was a HEAVILY flawed film with a cast of characters I'd never care to see again.

The first half seemed stuck in some kind of funk and the only reason I'd look forward to watching it again would be to better pin down my specific issues (aside from worst Star Wars character possibly ever...guy whose name I don't know, as portrayed by Forest Whitaker). The second half came alive and saved the movie. Characters I either didn't like or thought were really dumb throughout the first half had much better moments in the second half, though I still don't know anyone's name aside from Gin.

I couldn't help but get often distracted by odd plot holes and confusing character motivations. I'm at about a 3 to a 3.5 outta 5 right now...I'll give it a rewatch on home video before firming up my opinion but it feels like it's just maybe a shade above Episode 3. Better movie, less emotional punch. Certainly feels a full tier below the four movies I really like.

His character and everything with him SUCKED. He's one of the worst things in a Star Wars movie, and his stupid lie-detector-pus was pointless.

I didn't exactly care for his scenes, but I really loved the idea that there were elements of the rebellion that had become extremists/terrorists.

Saw felt underexplored but I still really dug his group. I liked that he was so far gone in his tactics and methods.
