Shin Godzilla *SPOILER* Thread

Postby lhb412 » Thu Jul 21, 2016 9:25 am

We're getting some pretty pervasive rumors at this point. Truth or just rumor, we'll know soon - and to keep the other thread open to folks who don't wanna be spoiled and just want to discuss general things about the movie - here's a spoiler thread!

possible spoiler regarding his origin in this movie. Wait for Satomi to start speaking in English.

I can't make out the first part. I THINK She says "It's a DOD codename : Godzilla." Maybe someone with better listening skills can pick up on it.

*edit* Not his complete origin. Just part of it.

She says DOE, actually. The subtitles spell it out as Department of Energy.

I always figured the full body shots were CGI. It's only a few shots of the head (and maybe some of the tail) that seem to sometimes be a prop to me.

I'm starting to connect the dots as to why they could not get the prop to work. They probably couldn't mix it in the scenes they wanted so it ended up looking like a poorly cut and pasted effect. The difference between this movie and the puppet used in the AoT movies is that they are trying to mix real life shots, CG shots and practical effects all in the same shot. Any scene involving the colossal titan puppet was based around a giant model wall and a green screen. Then they would just film actors in front of a blue screen or put CG people in the foreground. That was it.

That's my guess.

That's the second macquette, with a Goya in front of it. Supposedly Godzilla's skin is modeled after that of a Goya. That was mentioned in a recent interview with Higuchi.

LOL seriously?

That's hysterical. I wonder if the crew has any idea of these rumors?

It's typically just the fandom that pays attention to such tomfoolery.

What rumors? About tadpoles and whatnot? Dunno.
Goya being the inspiration for Shin-G's skin was mentioned in an interview with Higuchi and Shin-G designer Takayuki Takeya a week or two ago. I don't know the context of that photo, but I'd guess the Goya was placed there as a demonstration of that point. I don't think anyone was trying to fan the flames of tadpole rumors or anything. But I could be wrong.

There is some 2 Chan rumor or something that Little Godzilla buds from big Godzillas tail.

I thought it would be funny that the crew put that there to show the similarities in skin texture but unknowingly fueled some nonsensical rumor on an internet forum.

People not knowing about that interview and never having seen a Goya before would be confused, for sure! It does look like a shriveled up little creature. We have some growing in our garden right now, the leafy foliage of which is providing a "green curtain" in front of our sliding glass door. I can't stand eating them, though...too bitter!

The track listing for the soundtrack may hold spoilers... those classic Godzilla movie titles for a couple certainly suggest we're getting some reprised Ifukube themes.

I don't know if I should get my hopes up for some Sagisu Ifukube renditions or not. Interesting that Battle in Outer Space is mentioned in the listing as well.

James Ballard seemed to confirm that the tadpole rumors are true at Tohokingdom, he also suggested that tokumei's posts line up with the script.

It's quite a change, but I understand that giving Godzilla new 'tricks' will differentiate it from previous solo Godzilla and otherwise Godzilla as antagonist movies. Having a monster change and reveal new abilities is pretty much 'Monsters 101' anyway, and it's not like Godzilla hasn't gained and lost various superpowers over the years, so there's some precedent - even if this is more of a 'horror' spin on that.

What's more important is: do these various sub-Godzillas look cool?

This is sounding more and more like GINO 2.0.

The replication idea, the utterly ludicrous tadpole origin, and the baby Godzilla at the end of the film...all stupid.

I can look past the new origin, but the other stuff is really atrocious.

I look at it this way: Modern audiences are not going to accept a simple movie were a giant monster just shows up and walks around, fights the army, or maybe another monster or two (disclaimer: I'd be perfectly happy with that). These days audiences expects twists, craziness, outrageous things...seems like this is just an answer to that modern demand for over-the-top wackiness and action. So if all these G-tadpoles and tail-spawned G-baby rumors are true, it's just in response to the demands of modern audiences.

Again, early reviews here in Japan seem very positive, so maybe it all works. We'll see in 4 days!

I don't think that's necesarrily the case. Godzilla '14 and Cloverfield seemed to go over pretty well, and monsters having surprising biology that precipitates plot twists is a standard hallmark since modern monster-on-the-loose flicks started in the '50s.
