Toho or other Japan films that you want to be subtitled, etc

What Toho, or other Japanese films are out there, that have yet to have a subtitled release in the states? Or maybe a film that you wish had an updated subtitle track?

I'm specifically looking for kaiju-related films, but am open to other stuff too (films, anime, commercials, etc).

I think I found Daikaiju G (2009?), but I'm not sure what you mean by Ishiro Honda "non-genre" films. Is this what his works are to pre-Gojira referred as?

If I have time, I'd like to do a fan-subtitled track for the community, but I'm just seeing what the selection/demand is out there at the moment.

Daikaiju G was an independent kaiju movie by Kiyotaka Taguchi. Taguchi has worked on the special effects in GMK, Megaguirus, MM9 as well as last year's Love and Peace. He has been directing Ultraman X and Ultraman Orb episodes as well, which has raised his profile recently. He also made a little TV movie called Gehara which is pretty universally loved within the fandom. Gehara has been fan subbed and the Japanese Bluray (which shares a region with the US includes official english subtitles.) Daikaiju G was released in Japan on R2 DVD, unfortunately G has never been released in the US, and i have not seen any fan subs for it. It shows up pretty regularly on Yahoo Auctions for around $15.

The movie is decently action packed.. The kaiju has a very frenetic energy, moving and attacking quickly, and the film is a little bloodier than most kaiju films. It culminates in a robot vs kaiju battle.

One odd thing is that the cinematography has a very large number of dutch angles, which you dont really see as often in Taguchi's later work.

I've always wanted to see The Spirit of Godzilla with English subtitles. It's an 80-minute Japanese documentary that was included on the third disc of Toho's Godzilla: Final Wars special edition DVD in 2005. It covers the entire then-50-year history of the series and features interviews with lots of people who worked on the films.

All of the Heisei Series entries except King Ghidorah had making-of documentaries running 40 to 50 minutes on Toho's Japanese DVD releases. Echo Bridge included The Making of Godzilla vs. Biollante complete with English subtitles when they released that movie in North America but the others are all still in need of translations.

The Millennium Series films, being made in the heyday of the DVD era, all got deluxe DVDs from Toho filled with special features. The Making of Godzilla: Final Wars is 50 minutes long. Project GMK is over two hours and there are also separate documentaries about the making of the monster suits. Godzilla x Mechagodzilla has a half-hour feature with Michiru Oshima in Russia scoring the film with the Moscow International Symphonic Orchestra. Godzilla vs. Megaguirus has a 40-minute making-of as well as a 40-minute documentary about Japanese promotional events throughout the history of the series.

But if there's one Japanese documentary that deserves an English translation, it's The Spirit of Godzilla.

I would love to see some of Honda and Tsuburaya's war films get subtitled releases. Especially "Eagle of the Pacific" and "Battle of the Japan Sea". "The War at Sea" would also be welcome. One other thing that's been(unofficially)available, though never subbed, is the special "Toho Tokusatsu Movie Outtakes". Looks to be some really interesting info on this one and I'd LOVE to see it get a legitimate subbed release. However, I believe there are rights issues which may keep that from ever happening...

The Three Treasures I could see going to Criterion, as it's both a Toho special effects film (they've done Godzilla) and directed by Hiroshi Inagaki (they released his Samurai Trilogy).

I would also love a good release of The Three Treasures/Birth of Japan. I only have a bad copy with crappy subs. On the tokusatsu front, how about Gorath, The Human Vapor, and Secret of the Telegian? As far as I know, none of these have had a legit release on video.

Gorath, Human Vapor, and The Last War all reside with MGM (as they have Brenco films archive). Not sure if any distributor could license just the Japanese versions. Fortunately I have all these on VHS, but it would be nice if someone picked them up for Blu Ray. I know Telegian was released a long time ago on VHS, not sure who its rights reside with, I'm sure its in the thread of unreleased films
