‘Rugrats’ Revival? Nickelodeon Mulls Return of Classic Shows

Collider:
Nickelodeon May Revive Classic 90s Shows Like ‘Rugrats’ and ‘Doug’
ADAM CHITWOOD wrote:Indeed, I predict we’re just starting to see the tip of the iceberg with regards to “The Jurassic World Effect.” That fourth Jurassic Park film made history at the box office, due in large part to the fact that those who were impressionable young ‘uns when the original Jurassic Park came out were now amped to refuel that nostalgia by witnessing a new entry in the long-dormant franchise. 90s kids are now some of our country’s biggest consumers, ranging in age from 25 to 35, and if Corporate America creates a product that feeds on the nostalgia of early millennials, they’ll likely see an uptick in revenue stream.

Which brings us back to Nick reviving its 90s programming. As corporate-driven as this may be, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t interested in seeing more Doug or Hey Arnold!, or even a new iteration of Kablam!. Heck I’d probably watch an entire channel devoted to playing old episodes of 90s cartoons and kids shows, but if creating new content based on old characters is the direction Nickelodeon wants to take, I’ll be curious to see how it pans out.

Genndy Tartakovsky Wants A Samurai Jack Movie Or TV Mini-Series (Exclusive!)
Brandon Davis wrote:Speaking to him yesterday, Tartakovsky opened up about what could bring him back to television after making the jump into feature films. "I think through the years, after we finished Jack, almost every year it seems like Samurai Jack has gotten more and more popular and more and more people have seen it," Tartakovsky explained. "I feel like it's culminating to a fever pitch almost. I feel like it's time to maybe finish the story. We've been trying to get the feature off the ground but maybe that's just fate's way of saying this is a television thing and maybe it should be a mini-series or something like that."

In agreement, I told Tartakovsky, I (like many of you, I'm sure) can see a Samurai Jack movie coming along in the future. "Yeah, I could too - just nobody else in Hollywood can," he chuckled back at me.

Nickelodeon Is Making An ‘Invader Zim’ Movie
Nickelodeon and Invader Zim creator Jhonen Vasquez are working together to create an Invader Zim made-for-TV movie.
Amid Amidi wrote:The news was leaked today on the Tumblr account of Harvey Beaks creator C.H. Greenblatt, who you may recall from another big story a couple days ago. When asked by a fan if he would work with Vasquez on an Invader Zim movie, Greenblatt responded, “Jhonen IS making an Invader Zim movie for Nick. I’m not a part of it, but I’m excited.”

Nickelodeon is also working on made-for-TV movies for other vintage series, including Hey Arnold!, scheduled for release in 2017, and Rocko’s Modern Life, with an unscheduled release date.

After we published our story, Jhonen Vasquez denied on Twitter that he is developing an Invader Zim movie. However, as we learned a couple days ago, Nickelodeon forces its creators to go on the Internet and lie to their fans. In other words, we’re sticking to our story.

DC's Movie Universe May Make 2019 the Year of the Batman
James Whitbrook wrote:Batman & the DCEU

Bat-salt shakers at the ready, but a new rumor from the DCEU Leaks Eeddit suggests Warner Bros. will be releasing four Batman-related movies in 2019, just in time for the character’s 80th anniversary. Additionally, two animated Batman films are reportedly in development for a 2019 release date—one of which is an adaptation of The Long Halloween.

The plan for 2019 is to release four Batman related films. Gotham City Sirens around Valentine’s Day weekend, Nightwing on Memorial Day weekend, Batgirl in August and The Batman in November. The studio is doing this to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Batman.

The thread continues to state that Deathstroke will still appear in The Batman, but is no longer the film’s main villain; director Matt Reeves is interested in telling a story focusing on Batman’s entire rogue’s gallery. Meanwhile, the same thread also suggests Deathstroke’s son Grant Wilson will be the main villain of the solo Nightwing film. Wilson will be hired by Roland “Blockbuster” Desmond to take out all rival mob bosses in Blüdhaven.

There’s much, much more at the link—including more updates on directorial positions for Suicide Squad 2, updates on the Justice League Dark movie, and even plans for 2020 and beyond. But considering this is just a big long Reddit list—a really long one—it’s best to treat it with some skepticism for now.

THR JULY 19, 2017:
'Catfish' Helmers in Talks to Direct 'Mega Man' Movie (Exclusive)
Borys Kit wrote:Masi Oka and Chernin Entertainment are producing Fox's adaptation of the Capcom video game.

Video game Mega Man is heading to the big screen with Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the filmmakers behind the documentary Catfish, in final negotiations to write and direct.

Chernin Entertainment is producing the project with Heroes actor Masi Oka. Twentieth Century Fox worked for over two years to acquire the rights and finally closed a deal earlier this year.

The video game, first released in 1987 by Capcom, centers on a robotic lab assistant created by a scientist named Dr. Light. Light is betrayed by a colleague, the disgruntled Dr. Wily, who reprograms a line of robots in order to take over the world. The lab assistant, nicknamed Rock, then upgrades himself into combat mode in order to save mankind.

Mega Man’s popularity led to comics and manga adaptations on both sides of the Pacific, cartoons and even appearances in other video games. Over 50 games on multiple systems have sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.

Joost and Schulman made a splash with their debut, Catfish, the 2010 controversial documentary about online relationships. The filmmaker team catapulted into narratives when they were hired to direct found-footage horror movie Paranormal Activity 3, and followed that up with Paranormal Activity 4.

The duo last directed Nerve, the 2016 thriller starring Emma Roberts and James Franco that also dealt with the online world.

Joost and Shulman are repped by CAA and Lichter Grossman.

Awesome! I love Devil Dinosaur and Moonboy! They had that awesome crossover in the Godzilla comic in the late 70's, a few solo returns, and DD was even a pet on Hulk and the Agents of Smash!

(pssst... It's Moon GIRL!)
oh crud, not this again....

^That's the popular comic that's been running for a few years. In their home dimension ("Dinosaur World") Moon Boy dies and Devil is transported to modern day where he befriends a girl genius and they have adventures. It apparently has middling sales in comic shops but sells like gangbusters on the tpb market which is more accessible to kids, who are the primary audience.

(I fully expect Moon Boy to be revived or some such later date. It's an upbeat kids comic after all!)

I had never heard of this incarnation, so I looked it up on Wikipedia, apparently she first appeared in January 2016, so its been barely 2 years. Moonboy first appeared 40 years ago. seeing as how the classic version had just a couple of cameos in animation over the years, the idea to instantly go with *modernization* of characters vs. what most fans identify with just annoys me, but whatever, its been going on for a while, its just another annoyance. I'm not saying this is *ruined forever*, but my list of interests is dwindling because of things like this.

^ it's not very good. Moon girl is not a likable character - most of the narrative is about how she is smarter than everyone else... well that and Inhuman terrigen mist stuff. I had really hoped it would be a book my young daughter would enjoy that I could enjoy as well... turned out to be a chore for both of us. Maybe it's gotten better, but i don't know anyone that still reads it
