The metaphors seen that last fusion episode... Wow this a kids show!? It's been a fun ride so far. I'm convinced that Rose was the Optimus Prime of a Transformers type civil war within the Gems.

I'm not certain, surely there must be other good Crystal Gems out there that we haven't seen yet. When we see Lapis Lazuli again, perhaps she could fill a role like Ultra Magnus'.

If Crystal Gems have siblings like human siblings then maybe Steven has a Gem aunt somewhere; such a character might be a more direct match for Ultra Magnus. Sticking with types of quartz with "quartz" in the name leaves potential for a Crystal Gem with a name like Pink Quartz, Blue Quartz, Smoky Quartz, Rainbow Quartz, Angel Quartz, etc. Just a quick look turns up lots of potential "Quartz" names.

Now that you mention Ultra Magnus, considering what we see in the episode "Warp Tour" there could be

The designs are weird because they're apparently based on the way the characters are drawn in the show when they're depicted as being far away (hence simpler and exaggerating their distinguishing features).

So I caught up on the last 8 episodes.
Wow. Such feels. This show is great. I love how real Beach City feels. It reminds me of the attachment i felt toward towns in video games I played as a kid. I'm also really interested in why they destroyed the warp pad. Anyway, I love this show.

I'm enjoying the Steven Universe comic book. It's a lot of fun - but I've realized that there's something that makes it very different from the Adventure Time comic line.

By the time BOOM! Studios premiered their Adventure Time book the show was near the end of its third season and had well established it's world, various races and locations, and had begun parsing out some of the (still not entirely revealed today, three years later) backstory. Because so much had been established the comic could hit the ground running, exploiting the structure already available, exploring underused but well developed parts of the world, and having the freedom to make it a parallel universe where things can happen a but differently, not just copying what's happening in the cartoon.

The Steven Universe book is following a show still quietly unveiling it's mythology, and because of that the comic is restrained in the kinds of stories it can tell. It's still relies on the monster-of-the-week format of the earliest episodes.

Not that I don't love a good monster-of-the-week story...

... and quite a lot of info about the Gems and their relationship to Earth revealed last episode.

And apparently (according to many online commentators) quite a big part of this episode was inspired by a very disturbing Junji Ito manga, which I think tops Gravity Falls' David Lynch references (yes, it was a contest).

Steven Universe will have a premier every weekday next week, Adventure Time and Clarence have had similar weeks in the last few months.

I can't help but think yesterday's episode sets up what'll happen. Here are the episode titles:

According to Rob Sugar (Rebecca's brother and the inspiration for the character Steven) season 3 is a go.

Let's take stock: each season is 54 individual 11 minute episodes (though I believe on the accounting/business side of things they're counted at 26 half hour episodes) and we're just now, after a year and a half, reaching the end of the first season. This show'll be around for a while.

Being scheduled during work hours and bunch of visiting relatives means this weeks 6 new episodes will have to wait on the DVR for this weekend. I'll valiantly attempt to avoid spoilers.

Alright -- a thought that occurred to me while watching SU this week. Nothing spoilery to do with the new episodes so feel free to read.

Alright then, so we know that Rose Quartz had to give her gem to Steven so that he could live, and we know that in doing so Rose Quartz essentially dies. Ooh, just realized another Transformers bit...

If, maybe even when, Steven goes to the Gem home world could Steven get a gem of his own? And if Steven gets a gem of his own does that mean Rose Quartz could be restored to life?

I wondered, why cast Estelle if you weren't gonna have her sing? Turns out they were just saving it.

I like how the message of the Steven Universe/Uncle Grandpa crossover was essentially directly opposed to the online fan dread about the crossover: it's not cool to hate on stuff just because it's not your cup of tea, and you should never take stuff too seriously - even stuff you love. It was a bit like MST3K's "It's just a show. You should really just relax" (and I know Rebecca Sugar is a MST fan!).


Plus: Swat Katz got referenced in UG's list of Cartoon Network characters he's already helped.

In last weeks episode it appears that Steven has some level super-strength, he picked up his friend as if she was light as a feather. And Steven's comments in the car bring to mind my earlier musings wondering if we might see Rose Quartz return in some distant future episode and Steven getting a gem of his own (since he needs a gem to live).

The crossover episode was great fun, far better than I was expecting it to be.

I seems like the popularity of this show, or at least its online presence, has exploded in the last few weeks. The Season 1 finale seems to have really put the show on the map.


I hope CN turns on the merchandising machine! I want toys!
