I feel like a lot of people get hung up on the nonsensical time travel stuff, but if you overlook that, or just have fun with it and turn your brain off, it's a really fun movie. Arguably my favorite of the Heisei era and in my top 5 overall.

Or he should look directly into the camera with a shocked look on his face while silly music plays. Freeze frame, cut to black.
Perfect ending.

I'm with you on that. I actually like a lot of the monster stuff - not ALL of it but a LOT of it. This is probably THE Heisei Godzilla, and the one that Toho SHOULD be focusing on now instead of the 1994 version. Mechaghdorah looks great as well, and like Biollante has that "Holy crap, look at that thing!" quality to it. And with the great Ifukube returning, how can you not like the music? And like I always say, the ideas are great. Maybe they're not carried out too well, but you have to give them credit for exploring Godzilla's origins and playing around with the time travel idea.
But there's a lot of negatives here in the visual department. How is it that Tsuburaya perfected a flying King Ghidorah in 1964/65, but here we have mid air fighter plane battle using a Ghidorah prop that's as stiff as the one in Godzilla vs Gigan? I like the Godzillasaurus design, but that entire sequence is laughable in how incompetent it is. But some of the worst effects (some of the absolutely worst crap in any Godzilla film) goes to the stuff supporting the human drama. Stuff that would be bad even for a made-for-TV movie: awful jet pack effects, hilariously weak matting of the Mother ship and Kids, the hologram stuff, M-11 running with a goofy Sheldon Cooper smirk on his face, those idiotic Dorats...
This doesn't stop the movie from being entertaining, but it definitely stops it from being taken seriously like G84 or Biollante.
I think you have a typo here.. you accidently included the 73 suit with the 67 and 98.MekaGojira3k wrote:The Heisei suits are all fairly low on my list of designs and suits. I've just never cared for how big and fat it looked. I think the Burning variant is pretty striking, but the only designs I consider this one better than are the 67, 73, and 98.

Much like Godzilla vs Gigan, Erroneous on all counts!

MekaGojira3k wrote: Although I do group this, vs. MechaGodzilla, and vs. Destroyah together as being the middle-tier Heisei films. They aren't good, but they aren't Godzilla vs. Mothra.
DannyBeane wrote:I've said it before and I'll say it again, the zaniness of this film is so over the top that it compares well to the best of the showa films imo. Too me its just a very fun movie. From a technical or storytelling perspective I agree, this film is lacking, but I feel that is a critique people can throw at most Godzilla movies.
Gwangi wrote:Most Godzilla movies can be zany, over-the-top and even lacking. Unfortunately, this film contains none of those elements, as it is just a narrative mess, and because of that, it virtually destroys all what matters in the movie. Perhaps lacking can be a fit. The lack of a good screenwriter other than Kazuki ÅŒmori!
To me, this film will always be "The Phantom Menace" or "Attack of the Clones" of the Godzilla cycle.
