I know personally from listening to lots of radio word of mouth hurt this movie because a lot of casual movie goers (radio personalities) that were excited for the movie expected disaster porn with Godzilla and didn't get it. Going to the movies cost a lot of money these days and people don't want to pay for a subpar experience.

I know the company has "faith" in Edwards but at the end of the day it's their money, not his and I'm pretty sure in the final 30 minutes of the movie it is going to be a nonstop focus on the monsters and not be jumping back and forth between the human drama. I'm pretty sure Godzilla was the most hyped movie of the summer and it slipped through the cracks and the people at the helm know it and I think Edwards knows it too.

*edit* I thought Edwards knew that before he made Godzilla and I was wrong. Noted.

Then they should have gone and seen the "disaster" that was "Transformers 4" instead (an alka-selzer may have been a good idea afterwards).

Regardless of all the boo-hoo'n I think the movie holds up remarkably well after multiple viewings. Just my two cents.

Man, I'm just thinking about it..in four years the box office is gonna change so much, simply because of China. Movies will have great chances of making more there than here in the states. Basically any Hollywood movie that gets released there has almost no chance of failing because of how quickly its expanding over there. G2 can easily make 150m there in 4 years. Crazy.

I honestly would not be surprised if, by the time Godzilla 2 or 3 comes out, the way that films are released in the United States has changed pretty drastically.

Pretty much tells you how its gonna go down by 2018. By the time G3 is released in China.... Holy crap.

Nothing will change here, besides ticket prices.

I didn't see any superheroes. I saw three extremely large animals fighting for survival. When I was younger, I used to watch Lassie do the same thing when she or her owners were threatened. Does that make Lassie a superhero?

I think that for Godzilla 2 to be successful, it needs to hit the ground running, so to speak, in terms of monster action. And just as importantly, the conspiracy element in the Monarch aspect of the film's narrative should be explored in depth. A sinister, conspiratorial international organization at the heart of the human narrative, if written correctly and acted convincingly, could be an exciting element for the next film. Accordingly, I believe Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins should reprise their roles as Ishiro Serizawa and Vivienne Graham. I would like to see someone else added as a main Monarch-based character. I don't think we need a family-based drama as a sub-story again. The Monarch organization, with it's origins decades ago at the dawn of the Atomic age has a lot of material that could be mined for exciting, compelling subplots. When there are conspiracies, there is also so much to be concealed, and so much that requires willful malfeasance ,and the silent compliance of vested interests. If done right, with imagination, using perhaps, flashbacks and historical footage, Monarch could be a very interesting plot point.

As for the kaiju, the named monsters, being airborne, have a great potential for creating immense havoc. I think of high winds, cyclone-like in nature, in addition to the damage that would result from their attacks. And perhaps, in this film, Godzilla is not the friend he was against the MUTOs. In any event, he's going to up against a lot. A key element will be explaining, in a way that is convincing, but novel, the motivation of the attacking kaiju. I would like to see shocking, stunning visuals. And I'm not just talking about the visual effects. I mean in terms of plot twists and turns of events. Godzilla 2 should be truly scary.

With Big Hero 6 and The Hobbit both poised to surpass Godzilla's $200.6 million total at the domestic box office, the Big G will ultimately be the #12 top-grossing movie of the year in North America. That's right in the same ballpark as last year's high-profile disaster/creature feature, World War Z ($202m gross, #13 rank for the year). Not too shabby considering what heavy competition it faced from X-Men: Days of Future Past the week after it opened.

Overall, this was a below-average year for the domestic box office in general, with no movie managing to break $400 million. The last time that happened was 2011, which also had only two films that broke $300 million, the final Harry Potter and the third Transformers, both of which still significantly outperformed this year's Guardians of the Galaxy and Mockingjay Part 1. The last time the highest-grossing movie of the year landed in the $330m range was Spider-Man 3 in 2007.

This year also marked the first time in 25 years that July was not the highest-grossing cumulative month of the year. Additionally, with the exception of Guardians of the Galaxy, no summer 2014 release was able to outgross Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a springtime blockbuster that ended up outshining every movie that opened from May through July. It's been an unusual year at the domestic box office, to say the least.

GODZILLA added 4m more to its foreign total, for a global total of 528. I'm guessing its last minute numbers from countries that hadn't reported in a while.
