So...am I the only person that is wary of bringing in Mothra?
The knee-jerk reaction, even for me, was "I wanna see Mothra. She'd more or less work in this series." The more I think about it, though, the more I begin to wonder and start to think that it'd be somewhat problematic to bring in Mothra.
Mothra is often depicted as a force of nature attempting to restore balance to that which man throws out of order, whether she's fighting the human-created Godzilla, or defending the Earth from an alien invader, she's ALWAYS been aligned with the forces of good.
Mothra vs. Godzilla, given the Godzilla we got in this movie.......that wouldn't work. Godzilla's the good guy. For Mothra to come into this series, we would need her and Godzilla to team up against something worse...yeah, that could mean King Ghidorah and all, but I don't think we'll ever see Mothra vs. Godzilla with the way this thing has already started out.
Personally, I'd go the following route, in some fashion or another:
Godzilla 2:
-Bring in a Katagiri-like character: someone, whether he's DIRECTLY associated with/in charge of a military force or just closely affiliated (ie, an arms manufacturer or something) who looks at the destruction from the first film, and wants to kill Godzilla.
-Have Godzilla attack, but somehow show maybe a little later down the line, that he only attacked because this douchey human character attacked him first and provoked him.
-Bring in Anguirus, and depict him as essentially the bad guy (send him back to his roots from GRA), and have Godzilla fight him off but not kill him.
Godzilla 3
-Anguirus reappears, injured but pissed off, destroying a city. King Ghidorah appears and finishes him off...now, Godzilla (and here's where you can also introduce Mothra, as an Earth-defender to team up with Godzilla) must fight off Ghidorah
Godzilla 4
-After Godzilla's done fighting off (but maybe not killing, but there's a solution to that) Ghidorah, aliens appear...and they are pissed that Godzilla managed to foil their plans. In order to try again, they're bringing a pal for King Ghidorah...Gigan...I'd honestly prefer if NEITHER of these was in cyborg form....
Godzilla 5
-Mecha-King Ghidorah, Gigan (cyborg), and Mechagodzilla lead a charge against the Earth led by the aliens
Now, there's a lot of elements at play there, and maybe it'd be difficult to make it all work COHESIVELY, but it's sort of an idea that I like for a few reasons
1 - I'm sick to death of EVERYTHING being "intended" to be a trilogy and EVERY third film being the one that puts such a final capper on everything that there's no choice but to abandon the series and/or reboot it.
2 - it gives us the Godzilla vs. the military/mankind stuff we wanted to see
3 - it brings in Anguirus and keeps him fairly comfortably in the role we all know: the kaiju punching bag
4 - it brings in King Ghidorah
5 - it keeps Godzilla rooted as the hero
6 - it gives us increasing insanity throughout the run of the films
7 - Mechagodzilla leading King Ghidorah and GIgan into battle...who WOULDN'T want to see that?
Another idea that might actually be pretty cool is if, after two or three films, humanity decides to build Mechagodzilla(s) as an AID to Godzilla...as a sort of Earth defender built in the image of Earth's mightiest defender...and then Godzilla and Mechagodzilla fight together against something. That'd be a really unique and interesting team-up.
I'm just spitballing some ideas. I think with the tone they've established they can go in ANY direction they want but as long as they keep Godzilla as the hero and don't have him turn heel for NO reason, and as long as they give us some classic Toho kaiju, they can do whatever they want INCLUDING also continually creating kaiju. I liked the MUTOs so I'm not against more new kaiju...but I think we'd all like to see some different takes from this creative team on some Toho kaiju as well, to maybe breathe some new life and interest into these secondary kaiju that we all love.
How cool would it be if a whole generation of kids have Anguirus or Rodan or Gigan or something FIRMLY planted in their minds and as their favorite kaiju? That can only be a good thing, right?
