TALKBACK #28: Godzilla Final Wars

The suit is very well built. It's very sleek, yet Godzilla looks powerful. I don't care for the face, but the rest is pretty solid.

I don't think loving every film is a requirement to call yourself a fan.

I mean, I'm a fan in spite of HATING a few of the films...doesn't that speak to the quality of the ones I like? That I can overlook a few films I pretty much loathe and still LOVE Godzilla?

Of course we're all fans and we all love Godzilla, that's why we're all here

There are of course Godzilla movies that I prefer over others, but I love each and every one because:

1. Godzilla is in it.
2. It's a Japanese movie and has a Japanese flavor that no other non Japanese movie has.
3. It's tokusatsu and I love tokusatsu
4. Usually has giant monsters destroying cities and fighting other giant monsters, aliens or robots.

In Final Wars, I honestly don't mind the matrix, X-Men, etc, etc. rip offs at all. I actually see them more as inspiration or homages because they're done in such a fun and over the top way that's cool. And to be honest I think there are a number of Godzilla films that obviously have rip offs of American films and they don't bother me either. Godzilla Vs King Ghidorah, Godzilla & Mothra, Godzilla Vs Destroyer just to name a few. The only rip off that does bother be is the raptor stuff in GINO. LOL!

And to those who say that Godzilla doesn't show up until the movie is half over, well I think the same can be also said for Godzilla Vs King Ghidorah, Godzilla Vs Sea Monster. And even in Destroy all Monsters, Godzilla and the other monsters aren't in the movie all that much either. Most of the movie is about the humans flying around in the SY-3 trying to stop the Kilaaks. But hey, I still love it! LOL!

Anyway, sorry my rambling. I just don't think that Final Wars is as bad as most people think or say it is. I don't find anything wrong with not liking it, it's just the hatred that I don't understand.

So we've had a lot of school functions/area events that have disrupted class. My 7th period finished their major projects quickly (good class/small class) and they chose movies. They know I like Godzilla so asked about them. I said I'd bring one in to let them watch as a reward for doing their work and they chose Final Wars. They all seemed to really dig it. They questioned a lot of the logic (what a terrible thing to do with this film) but the major complaint came in that HUUUUGE chunk of time between the first invasion of kaiju and releasing Godzilla.

"Is Godzilla in the rest of this movie?" asked one of the kids.

Meanwhile, on FB, someone asked people to list their top 5 Godzilla films. I'm the only person who doesn't have GFW in their top 5 out of like 15 responses.

GFW will never be in my top 5! Despite all the kaiju in it....it's probably in my bottom 5. LOL

Yeah I've noticed this one seems to be really popular amongst the younger fans. I just can't escape the feeling of parody when I watch the film. It feels like someone making fun of the idea of this genre instead of paying tribute. Maybe that's part of its appeal to younger and more casual fans as they don't have the same attachment to the classic movies that we do.

I feel like a cranky old grandpa waving my cane at the kids on my lawn when I talk about this movie lol.

I have tons of attachment to the Showa stuff but still dig the parody notion. So I dunno what I am.

This is to be expected, when I was a kid I loved the Heisei Films because they were "more coolerer" and "yay lasers" than the showa series. But as I've matured, the Showa's charm and craftsmanship have outlasted any of those feelings.

Watching this again today trying to like it and the end result is always the same...I hate GFW!!! I loathe Kitamura and I am disgusted that Toho thought this was a good 50th anniversary movie.

I hate the over the top Matrix fight scenes, it's overlong and underdeveloped. The script is terrible. The acting is horrific. How anyone thinks Don Frye is awesome is beyond me. Every time he delivers a line I swear he's reading a cue card. Sure give it a big budget and instead of just making a solid movie with more money the director try too much and everything looks shoddy. Instead of respecting the Godzilla series it mocks it and that does not sit with me well at all.

Sure it's fine showing Godzilla being all badass! But really, how about showing respect to Toho's other monsters! These monsters have fans too you know. Making Gigan utterly pathetic in it's opening fight I found so insulting. Why even bother making a Hedorah suit if the screen time it gets is 60 seconds long. I can't even fathom why they bothered. I don't want monster cameos I want monster action. Godzilla's about overcoming the odds, not walking all over his opponents without a sweat!

Sorry I'm rambling but I really hate this movie. If it didn't come with Tokyo SOS I wouldn't have bought it.

Take a hint Kitamura...you want an alien invasion story that is solid and entertaining why don't you watch G vs Monster Zero or Destroy All Monsters to see how it should be done.

Yes I'd rather watch Godzilla vs Megalon or Godzilla vs Megaguirus anyday over this!

I watched this last night....and suddenly I didn't like this as much anymore. Something about it just didn't work on this viewing. I don't know, I think the human stuff which normally amuses me just didn't work. I mean a lot of the stuff with the Xillien controller works, but I just. nope.
It's weird.

Had a buddy of mine in from Chicago this weekend to go see the new movie. Any time the two of us and my wife were home thinking of what to watch, one of us would say, "Let's watch Final Wars" and the other would immediately scream, "NOOOO!!!!!"
