So Good News/ Bad News...

Good News: IDW is publishing 13 issues of Godzilla comics into a single book!

Bad News: Its the "Ongoing" series that i was so critical about

Good News: It looks like Godzilla "Ongoing" will now be known as "Godzilla: History's Greatest Monster" (i cant tell you how happy that really makes me to have something to call it other than "Ongoing")

Bad News: It's hitting shelves end of April... so people might pick this up after walking out of the Edwards film rather than any of the superior books IDW has released (IMHO that would be all of them, but i'd at least hope new comers would be directed towards "Half Century War" or "Rulers of Earth")

Good/Bad News: One of these was planned for Kingdom of Monsters but was cancelled.

Originally, it was said by IDW that we'd see new kaiju? I wonder what happened to that idea?

New as in "non-Toho"? I think I've only ever heard the opposite, that they'd only be using Toho monsters (even during KoM when the illusion monsters attacked the soccer kid)

All I can say is that Rulers of Earth has never really disappointed me.

The previous 2 series were downright terrible. A few bright spots, but mostly a bore and the monster action was mediocre.

ROE is everything the first two series should have been. I almost hope they could reboot the series and start fresh just to see what kind of stuff we could get.

Legends was also great, as was HCW and G&G.

It doesn't look like we have a general IDW comics thread, so forgive me if I'm posting this where I shouldn't.

Anyway, I've been trying to catch up on the Godzilla comics, so I bought some trades. I have the entire run of Kingdom of Monsters, Godzilla Legends, he first trade of "Godzilla" and some single issues of Rulers of Earth. I'll be ordering Half Century War and Gangsters and Goliaths in trade form soon. I didn't get the second and third volumes of "Godzilla" because to be honest, I don't recall really hearing anything good about it... at least KOM had kind of mixed reactions.

So far I've read the first three issues of Legends. The first one wasn't the best thing ever, but I had a blast reading it and it made me really happy. The second one was "meh" and the third was pretty cool, but I found it kinda pointless since it seems like the first act of a big story... I mean, it was good, but... what was the point?

I'll let you guys know what I think as I move forward.

Well, Kingdom of Monsters, History's Greatest Monster, and Rulers of Earth are all technically one long continuity, but you can understand each one of them on their own without having to read what came before. The character of Steven Woods appears in KoM and RoE but he acts so different in the latter that it might as well be an entirely new character. I think they just wanted to establish a direct link to KoM for some bizarre, unfathomable reason.

Rulers of Earth is what IDW's ongoing Godzilla series should have been from the start. Some stories are self-contained (3,4,5), others span a few issues (1-2, 6-7), but they all feed into the overall story arc that seems set to climax with issue 8. Different issues feature different monsters and offer interesting matchups between them, so it's like Legends but with continuity and a consistent creative team.

KoM and especially HGM fell flat because, among other things, they were mostly just one long story broken up into chunks without regard for pacing, which made a lot of individual issues unfulfilling. Maybe they'll come across better if you're reading them for the first time all together as a trade paperback but that kind of structure just isn't conducive to an ongoing format with 12 issues spread out over an entire year.

I don't know why i am so surprised to see this since i enjoy the series so much but ROE made a 2013 top ten list for one of the writers over at CBR. There are also 5 other entries that I have seen on a number of top ten lists, so maybe i should get to checking them out.
