Someday I'll watch that show, but it'll have to be subbed. I need to understand the insanity I'm seeing, as much as possible at least.

I dunno, I like 70's era tokusatsu (ok-I initially just said "toku" here, but for whatever reason that abbreviation seems to spark ire and hate from some of the old timers for reasons of which I'm not quiet sure). I enjoy 70's toku ("OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" it I give up) un-ironically, and we both share a love of Gigan so I might actually like Ace if/when I see it.

Ace is wacky and weird and crazy and colorful and unpredictable and wild.

Guiron is downright drab by comparison and the pacing renders it an absolute snore-fest. Yawn.

About three-quarters of Gyaos, actually, and I like Jiger too. The first twenty minutes of Viras are delightful but I have to pretend the film ends after the race is over. The first film is hilarious to watch because the script is so bad and Barugon is the only one that is comparable to Toho's output.

I'd agree with all of that except your assement of Guiron. You're the only human being I've ever known to call that movie dull.

Maybe it's not as outlandish and crazy as Ace, but it's delightful, harmless fun.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, to fully appreciate that film it helps to have seen it as a child.

I really have fun with vs. Guiron. It was my first Gamera film, so maybe that has something to do with it? I dunno. I think even if I had first seen it as an adult I'd still be into it.

All I know is I went into it expect "OOO, WACKY JAPANESE MONSTER HIJINKS" and came away extremely disappointed. I was probably spoiled by Ultraman.

The first time I saw Guiron was the Sandy Frank version @ 1990. I hated the dubbing and it made an already silly movie almost intolerable. Then I finally tracked down the AIP version "Attack of the Monsters" ok- at least this was a silly verison of a film I could nto watch. Having the S!F DVD is nice to have the original Japanese version in great quality, but in all honestly 9/10 times I watch this film, it has to be MST3K . Oh and since I posted it elsewhere, I just revisted the Neptune Media VHS version "Gamera vs Guillon". A glorified fan edit, but it definitely brings somethign unique that none of the others has. Translated Japanese on screen text. I can't believe i actually own 4 different versions of this film .

Anyway, as for Super Monster. Yes it is a mess, but I'd like to know more about the american company that did the dub for it (wasn't AIP or Sandy Frank...). online information is scarce at best. Also I actually did have a TV broadcast version with the English opening cedits. I pannicking now that I may have lost it, I'll have to remember to check when I get home.

Well, the dub is an international one (Hong Kong). Filmways released basically the complete international version here. The only difference is that their logo is tacked on the front of the film.

I'm already half-way there. A have a whole shelf devoted to Guiron figures in my collection, an honor that no other villain kaiju has in my entire collection.

Guiron is essentially a colder, deadlier version of Red King (they're both bullies but Guiron is a little better at it, that doesn't detract from Red King mind you...one of the things that's so appealing about him is just how stupid he can be at times (see Ultraman Max)) personality wise and he has to be one of the most visually striking kaiju from the Godzilla/Gamera universes. (not going to mention Ultraman because he's pretty tamed compared to a lot of kaiju there).

The film itself, is pure, innocent magic. Maybe one of the reasons you don't like it Jared is because it was talked up as being some sort of crazy, zaney adventure but in reality, it's just the sort of thing kids would pretend was happening on the playground.

Thanks for the back-up Jelly. I don't know why a children's film has to be so damned divisive. I don't think anyone is claiming it's a masterpiece of cinema. It's one of my favorite films of all time and I'm not sure I can even call it a good movie.
