You may not be but "too Matrix-y" is a very common criticism leveled against the show.

So you've seen this criticism about the show before?

It just seems baffling to me why you'd want to argue this if it's something that the majority of fandom seems to see in the show. I don't even give a damn what it rips off, the show's visuals straddle the line of brilliant and uninspired all at the same time.

Yes, there are connections between Blade Runner and Matrix on both a narrative and visual level just as any two films in a certain genre are bound to share characteristics of one another.

Finally finished this series. It's wildly uneven, no where near as good as the original Ultraseven.

There are some real highlights in the middle of the series. Bittersweet stories of romance and loss. But then the final few episodes draw on for entirely too long. The amnesia sub-plot becomes so excessively convoluted and ridiculous. After the series' final three episodes I was just thankful it was all over. Not horrible mind you, but the final three episodes are easily the weakest of an already uneven show.

Other misc stuff:

-The guy who played Jin should be in more toku. He seems made to be a Red Ranger or Kamen Rider.

-Ultraseven X is a beautiful looking show, which constantly made me think of 1984, The Matrix and yes, Blade Runner.

-Ultraseven X's character design remains my favorite look for Seven. I have no problems with how Seven originally looked, I just prefer this one a bit more.

-The fights are really cool, but entirely too short.

Anywho, I'm feeling really toku'd out. Gonna take a break for a bit (cartoons!!!!!) then probably hit up Nexus and Max again. Hopefully I'll get to see Ultra Q this year as well but that'll prob be about it (besides giving the new Kamen Rider show a try this fall)

^ very few Ultra series got US home media releases. Ultra Q, Ultraman, Ultraseven and Ultraman Tiga are the only series on DVD, and only recently Crunchyroll started streaming some series.

If you haven't checked out Nexus yet, that's worth a watch and similar in tone to U7X. Crunchyroll has it.

But on topic, Ultraseven X is one of my favorite

This was one of the first shows I watched when I started getting back into the Ultra series. It reminds me of the type of original series that the Sci-Fi channel would play in the late 90's/early 00's. It has a bad reputation but I thought it was a lot of fun.

^ I'm currently watching Nexus on Cruncyroll, and it's spectacular. I also really, really, really recommend 1998's Ultraman Gaia (also on Crunchy) - it's ambition often outstrips its effect budget, but it's got great characters, a great overarching storyline, great music, and two Ultra heroes for the price of one!

Ultraseven X was an immediate hit with me when I watched it a few years back. Remembering it now, Rodan has a point about the hammy nature of the show and its plot holes, but I really enjoyed the surreal nature of the show and its deceptively small scale. I'd like to think it would be a popular show over here, and I really hope Crunchyroll picks it up in the future.
