Ranking the Gamera films

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

Hey! I never revised my list to include the rest of the Showa films!

    Love
    • Gamera 3 Awakening of Iris
    • Gamera the Brave
    • Gamera 2 Advent of Legion
    • Gamera Guardian of the Universe
    • Gamera Vs. Barugon

    Generally Very, Very Good
    • Gamera Vs. Gyaos
    • Gamera Vs. Jiger

    A Mad Trainwreck of Hilarity
    • Gamera the Giant Monster

    Varying Stages of Unwatchability
    • Gamera Vs. Zigra
    • Gamera Vs. Guiron
    • Gamera Vs. Viras

That Which Teaches You The Very Depths of Despair
    • Gamera the Super Monster

I will never understand what some of you see in Guiron or Viras. Those films are dreadfully boring. :|

I agree with you on Viras. (Not so much about boringness, but on unwatchability).

You're dead wrong about Guiron, though.

Guiron is somniferous as hell though. Less so than Viras but it still moves at a snail's pace.

It's all about nostalgia for Guiron. All of the Just For Kids VHS releases are close to my heart, and then there's the added nostalgia of the MST3K treatments.

Yeah, it's nostalgia (it was the first Showa Gamera film, 2nd Gamera film I ever saw). But I also think everything about it is so insane that I can't help but love it. Guiron helps elevate things. He's crazy looking and has a decent amount of personality.

Cornjob is the best character in any Showa Gamera movie.

Yeah, but Cornjob also seems dense enough to fall for it being a gun.

Insane? Guiron is SO tame compared to 70s Ultraman. I expected so much more after all the hype, honestly. :P

The fact that 80% of the fandom (a very real statistic that I just made up) seems to hold Guiron up as this vaunted epitome of the craziness of the kaiju genre. I went into it expecting insanity but I guess having just recently finished Ultraman Ace ruined it for me.

I thought when you typed Guiron you meant the Kaiju, not "Guiron" as short for referring to Gamera vs. Guiron.

Also you know nobody cares about Ultraman.

Legion wrote:The original 1965 Gamera and Gamera the Brave are at the very bottom of my list of favorite Gamera movies. At the top are Gyaos, Guiron and Jiger, followed by the three Kaneko films (G2, G1 and G3 in that order), then Supermonster, Barugon, Zigra and Viras.
the original is the only Gamera film I've seen thus far that I could easily say I don't like.

It's a bore.

I honestly can't rank all these movies as I haven't watched all of the Showa films. I can say that Gamera vs Gyaos, Gamera vs Guiron, Gamera vs Jiger and Gamera vs Barugon are GREAT Showa era Kaiju films. I haven't watched the original Gamera in awhile, but I don't remember it being boring like others have said. Need to watch the other Showa films.

All the Heisei Gamera films range from ok to great. GOTU is probably my favorite while Legion isn't too far behind. Irys.... eh, that's one strange Kaiju film. I still don't really know how to describe that one.

I think Gamera the Brave is one of the most underated Kaiju films out there. There's a nice mix of Showa and Heisei era feelings in the film. Works out great imo.

Yeah, The Brave did a great job of blending the quality of the Heisei series with the kid friendliness of the Showa era.

It's really the direction Gamera should go in the future. Add a little more fun maybe...make Gamera a little less cute and a tad bit more fearsome ala G2's Gamera but mixing the kid elements of the Showa with the earnestness and realism of the Hesei series is great recipe for success I think. Really, if everyone sticks to what they do best there's no reason the marketplace couldn't handle a succesful Godzilla, Gamera and Ultraman series. Yes, they all revolve around giant monsters but they're wildly different takes on the matter.

Yeah, I don't really have a problem with the design, but I'd rather have something a little more G2 than the cutesy Brave design. Though it totally works in the film.

I agree... but then again, he was just a baby, hence the "cuteness"- I could easily see Toto growing into something along the lines of the G2 Gamera.

Also, I agree with KG about how this is the perfect combination for Gamera.

I can understand one not liking the film, but I'll never, NEVER understand the people that hate it enough to put it towards the bottom of a Gamera rankings list. Its baffling to me, honestly. I never got the intense level of negativity some people have for this film... and I never will.

I can't imagine someone hating GTB, but loving something like Guiron or Jiger or something, that's for SURE.
