Another thing is just how f*cking OVER marketed kids movies are these days. Granted, toys and products for children's films have ALWAYS flooded the market, but the commercialism is so ridiculous now... I mean, look at Wall-E... a good movie (the first half being AMAZING) about environmentalism and a satire of commercialism, but how are we supposed to buy into it if there is WALL-E EVERYTHING when you walk into any store in the world?
And don't even get me started on the Lorax being used to shill SUVs...

the Wall-E thing is understandable...you're not gonna NOT market the film. It's not the filmmakers' fault that the studio needs to wring out every nickle and dime they can.
