king_ghidorah wrote:And don't forget, there's only 2 films so far. I figure they're probably saving a lot of the deeper stuff for the last two movies as I recall the original series starting off with action and then adding the deep stuff towards the end of the series.

Yeah, I've been keeping that in mind, and that too is another reason why I haven't checked these out yet. I kinda wanna just take them all in at once. If the third part is another radical departure, I'd like to know if its a good one before buying the two releases that lead up to it, ya know?

king_ghidorah wrote:And BTW Mouth...I watched Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer tonight for the first time, a good film but I don't love it like most horror fans seem to (probably because it's so good, and realistic that I don't like to stay in the world the film presents).

Yeah, its certainly not a pleasant film, which, in this case, is what the point is. I'd say this is up there with the original Texas Chainsaw in terms of just how uncomfortable it is... maybe even more so. Not for everyone, but still an incredibly well done movie. Michael Rooker is an amazing and underrated actor.

king_ghidorah wrote:Also watched Kurosawa's Stray Dog tonight...couldn't get into it

Noooooooo! J/k. This is a really good one, but not one of the absolute bests, so I can't berate you too much. I like this one for its really interesting commentary on post war Japan and the chemistry between Mifune and Shimura.

You can blame Tomino (creator of Gundam) for that one. In fact, much of Eva's tone, right down to how the two films in 97' were set up (One a recap and the other a new ending for the series) were a direct homage (unless I'm drastically mistaken) to Space Runaway Ideon (<3). In like, the very tail end of that film or so goes very KILL EM' ALL (not a new thing for Tomino).

I don't think they were arguably deeper. I think they just are. It's not perfect, but I think Eva was still doing something kind of revolutionary at the time. Unfortunately, as K_G mentioned, a lot of anime nowadays is pretty heavy handed with it, and that seems to be a trend (at least with mecha anime) inspired by Evangelion.

I'm pretty sure there WAS a thread there at one point, but since threads in the Anime forum only last like 5 minutes, it has long been gone.

Yeah Stray Dog was just a little too slow for what I was in the mood for tonight. Can't wait to rent Don't Be Afraid of the Dark next week though!!! (And then in March, The Skin I Live In!!)

And I agree...I think there was a Rebuild thread but it expired very, very quickly.

On a side note...I really, really want to watch the Daimajin trilogy tonight but I also want to wait for to watch the films again on blu ray....and that's like 10 months away....I may not survive this. I'll probably have to just break down and watch my dvd copies.

And Kiryu...kudos for the hedgehog refrence man lol. I remember I felt like that saying perfectly summed up life when I first saw that series, but since then I'm a happier guy and life and all the crazy people in it don't seem so hedgehoggy lol.

WELL HERE GOES NOTHING.

And since that's a pretty boring (though not ineffective) cover, here's this too:

They seemed to give some of the women, slightly more realistic (and to me appealing) body types in the movies. I have "fan service" in anime. In most anime, if you duplicated that same shot, you wouldn't be able to see her face because her boobs would block out the screen.

I picked up Cyborg 009: Unedited and Uncut at the Half Price Bookstore yesterday during their 20% sale. The set only cost me $4 and change - great deal.

Image

It contains the only 8 episodes of the 2001 series that Sony bothered to release in the US. The televised versions of the same 8 episodes were released over two single DVDs; as I understand it not much was actually trimmed though.

If you have a Half Price Books in your area they're well worth checking out. HPB is a buy-sell-trade business focusing primarily on books, but they also carry home video, and vinyl & CDs (handy if you're interested in records). They also get in some new books (publisher remainders I believe) and home video (close outs I expect).

Stuff I got in the mail the other day when I took advantage of Right Stuf's Christmas sale:

Then these ones, also from the sale, are in the mail or backordered.

Okay -- just what is Sgt. Frog about? It seems like it could be a fun show.

Tiny frog aliens trying to take over Earth. They aren't very successful.

As well as a really fun dub. I've met several of the dub cast members. Also there's several Toho movie references, ones I really need to get around to submitting to Toho Kingdom.

Yeah, I have like the first 6 volumes of the manga and there's a ton of references to other scifi/anime in that as well.

Just bought all the "Shout! Factory" Gamera DVDs today. I've never seen the showa Gamera films in a decent format other than just the crappy VHS's and low quality DVDs release over the years (Alpha Video anyone? *shudder* :puke:), so I'm really looking forward to these. It will be awhile before I receive these since I am in Japan, but I should get them soon (I have a region free dvd player).

Speaking of Gamera, my New Year's resolution for 2012 is to finally start collecting some Gamera figures (I only have one Gamera figure...a Bandai Gamera 3 figure)...

I found LINDA LINDA LINDA on DVD today for only $6 used! I was bad and picked it up. Besides, I need a GOOD Bae Doona film to wash away the pain of betrayal leftover from Spring Bears Love! D8

Arrived today...

ULTRAMAN NEXUS, all ten Japanese volumes, plus THE NEXT movie (I already had this on bootleg, but nice to have it properly).

Absolute steal at £140 (roughly) in total!

Also bought SINKING OF JAPAN yesterday, at my local Cash Converters of all places, for only £2.
