I wanted to "expand my horizons" with Toho, so to speak, and I'm exceptionally glad I've done so. I currently have seven Kurosawa titles. I've got my eye on Ran, but it's too expensive for me right now. I have no job, and the only reason I bought the two I did yesterday is because I got paid for odd-jobs. I' interested in Stray-Dog, and also The Bad Sleep Well.I've been interested in the then modern-day dramas like that. I wasn't overly impressed with Drunken Angel, but it's foolish to base one's taste off of one film, so I'll be on the lookout for deals on those. Of course, I really enjoy the period-dramas. I think I might pick up Kagemusha next. Anyway, I think this is pretty much my new hobby. I'll always be a fan of the Japanese science-fiction genre; that will never change. But in the last few years I feel I've come to appreciate films, especially these films, on a more complex level, I guess would be the best way to put it, than I have in the past. Not so much that I can't turn off the world around me and enjoy them, but I've opened up a whole new door to myself in watching these films. The thing that amazes me is that these are some of the greatest films ever produced, but you don't hear about them outside of this community very much. It makes me feel good to have people ask me "what did you watch the other day?" only to answer "[insert Japanese title here]" and see the reaction. I get these "you're nuts" looks sometimes, but I know that I'm experiencing culture at its finest.
